Sam Laverdiere Repeats, Zoe Carroll Triumphs in Class B

The Class B girls' race featured three of the top eight runners in our last MileSplit Maine individual rankings. York's Zoe Carroll the Southern Regional champion, MDI's Amelia Vandongen the Northern Regional champion, and Olivia Wentworth of Yarmouth.

Vandongen set the early pace with Carroll right on her heels, the duo exited the woods after the mile first opening up a nine-second lead over the first chase pack led by Freeport junior Lucy Huggett and Wentworth. Rowan Barry of Greely was a few seconds back in fifth.

Not much changed as Vandongen and Carroll remained stride for stride as they exited the woods just beyond the two-mile mark. Carroll was in this same position a week ago before pulling away over the final mile to win.

Huggett had broken away for third as she was around eight seconds back with a mile to go. Barry had moved up to fourth, while Wentworth was a few strides back in fifth.

Over the final mile, Carroll was able to open up a twenty-one-second gap over Vandongen as she powered away to win the Class B state title in her first season of cross-country with an 18:49.84 effort. Her effort was twenty-five seconds better than a week ago.

Vandongen crossed the line second at 19:10, her third consecutive Class B state runner-up finish, losing to a runner from York each time. Amelia has shown remarkable consistency, her highest finish was fourth as a freshman.

MDI freshman Rebecca Rand ran a smart race to grab sixth place with 19:56, she was followed closely by Leavitt junior Haley Marston in 19:58. Lilah Hall of Freeport continued her strong postseason running with an eight-place effort of 20:12, and next was senior Dylan Burmeister of Lincoln Academy in 20:14. MDI freshman Kulani Granholm rounded out the top ten with her 20:17 finish.

Behind three of the top ten finishers plus all five scorers in the top fourteen the Mt Desert Island Trojans returned to the top of Class B for the first time since 2021 with 41 points. Freeport made a big push coming the closest any team has all year to the Trojans as they placed four runners in the top thirteen and finished with 53 points.

York who had won the last two team titles was third with 88, followed by Cape Elizabeth 141, and Yarmouth 164 rounded out the top five teams.
