The 2025 USM New Year's Invitational produced several of the top performances in the state. Marshwood senior Andre Clark set the tone early as he blitzed to 6.43 in the prelims to break the meet record and then lowered it in the finals with a 6.41. The top four times in the 55m were run in the final. Ashley Connolly of Gorham took the girl's 55m final as she clocked 7.54 to turn back Class B leader Avery Bariteau of Fryeburg Academy with her 7.59.
Windham senior Tayla Pelletier had a big day as she set a new meet record in the pentathlon. Pelletier set a state-leading time of 8.69 in the 55m hurdles to open the event. She tallied 2947 points ranking her the sixth-best performance in the country. Pelletier would later add a state-leading 36-9 1/4 effort to win the triple jump. Colby Crear a senior from Pelham set a meet record 3288 in the boy's pentathlon which ranks him sixth in the country.
Scarborough's Ethan Keller led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Red Storm in the mile. The senior took the lead just before the 400m mark and ran a negative split as he covered the final 400m in 63.3 to clock a new state-leading 4:26.02. Teammates, Baxter and Atticus clocked 4:30.17 and 4:31.5 respectively. In the girl's race another Red Storm standout Laurel Driscoll controlled the race from start to finish as she took the field through the halfway point in 2:42 before dropping the pace down each lap with a 71.57 last 400m to stop the clock at 5:10.98.
Cheverus sophomore Paige Alexander clocked a personal best of 2:20.18 as she ran near identical splits throughout the race to set a new state-leading time. In the boy's 800m race, Harrison Dunne used a sub 30-second last lap to pull away for the win, his time of 2:01.91 set a new state-leading mark.
The boy's 2 mile was a record-breaking effort as Bishop Guertin's Matthew Giardina pushed the pace from the gun. Giardina fresh off his 7th place finish at Footlocker Cross-Country Nationals clocked a facility record 9:16.86, which is the second fastest in the country. Lake Region senior Sam Laverdiere ran stride for stride with the leader through the 1600 and then dropped back in the second mile as he clocked a state-leading 9:33.16. Thornton Academy Junior Margaret Tripp took the girl's two-mile with an 11:22.99 holding off a challenge from Boothbay/Wiscasset's Karen Higgins at 11:29.59.
South Portland's Arnaud Sioho leaped out to a new state-leading mark of 22-5 3/4 to win the long jump. Samuel Gerrie of MCI jumped a Class B leading 21-7 1/4. Logan Glidden of Sanford jumped 43-5 for a personal best in the triple jump to win the event, the mark is the second-best in the state.
The boy's pole vault closed out the meet with an exciting competition. Greely senior Samuel Anania won the competition with a state-leading 14-0 clearance, leading four other vaulters over the 13 feet. Thornton Academy freshman Sebastian Snyder equaled the state freshman record with his 13-0 clearance. On the girl's side, Katie Spencer of Greely cleared 10-6 to win the competition as three others cleared 10-0. Briella Boudreau of Freeport cleared 10-0 to equal the state freshman record.
