The skies cleared, and the sun was shining as the WMC championship meet got under way at Falmouth Community Park. After some strong rain and winds yesterday, the weather cooperated and the course held up well under the wet conditions.

The pace was brisk right off the start as Silas Eastman asserted his presence right away, sprinting to the front of the pack, he was followed by Tim Follo (Falmouth), Abshir Horor (Waynflete) & Thomas Edmonds (Falmouth). Eastman would keep the peddle down as he cranked the first mile in 5:05. Falmouth looked strong as team at the mile, with Greely, York &  17:1Cape also running well.

The second mile at Falmouth is the slowest and most challenging, as the terrain doesn't allow a runner to get into a rhythm. "My plan was to take it out fast" Eastman would say, "I just relaxed after the mile, and tried to hold a steady pace".  He would hold on to his lead throughout but the duo of Horor and Follo, worked well together as they closed the gap down over the final mile. Silas would run 16:18.8, the 5th fastest time in course history. Horor had a strong last 500m to pull away for 2nd, his time 16:25 equalled the 7th fastest performance ever. Follo ran very strong leading his #2 ranked Yachtsmen, crossing in 16:28, the 8th fastest performance and became the #2 Falmouth runner on his course. Greely's Sam Johnston finished a strong 4th, breaking 17 minutes, with a 16:57, while Merriconeag Jack Pierce ran a smart race moving up over the 3 mile course to nab a top 5 spot, 17:11.       Rounding out the top 10, who earned first team all-conference honors as a result were Mitchell Finitz  (York) 17:15 who moved very well over the last 3/4 mile to emerge from a large pack. John Lake (Falmouth) earned 7th (17:19) with a strong finishing kick to get by 8th place Ben Nickerson (Yarmouth) 17:20. Freshman Will Shafer (GNG) crossed in 9th 17:25, with NYA's Cam Reagen in 10th 17:27.

Falmouth the top team in Class B all season won the Boys Divison 1 meet, scoring 42 points to defeat runner-up Greely by 20 points, with York one point back in 3rd with 63. Cape running without #1 Thomas Bottomley out with a sore throat/fever finished 4th with 81. In the Boys Division 2 NYA reign supreme scoring 50 points to edge runner-up Waynflete by 11 points.

Varsity Girls Race  RACE VIDEO

   Blazing pace..

Those two words describe the start of the Varsity Girls WMC Championship race, as Kendra Lobely (Poland) shot off the starting line, and sprinted to the front, her pace was ambitious and it was clear she wanted to really push it early. Lobely would lead hitting the mile in 6:00, with Heather Evans (York) & Kirsten Sandreuter (Greely) about 5-6 seconds back. Behind them was a large pack with Kelsey Barton, Rachel Nichols, Emma Inhorn, & Catherine Tierney (Cape), Martha Veroneau (Waynflete), Maggie Parrish & Meg Palumbo (Falmouth), Sarah Becker & Josselyn Richards-Daniels (Yarmouth).

Once the runners emerged from the woods after traversing the wooded section of the course, the race was even between Lobely, Evans & Sandreuter. This group would stay together as they toured the outer fields, however they would be joined by Kelsey Barton (Cape) as they approach the backstop, it was a 4 girl race now with just over a mile to go

The group would be pared down to three with 3/4 of a mile to go as the senior Barton took over, trying to get rid of the challenge from the freshman Evans & Sandreuter, but they weren't going anywhere. Lobely was in 4th, with Nichols closing the gap in 5th, Veroneau was next leading a pack with Inhorn & Becker.

As the runner appeared after climbing the hills for the last time, Evans had taken over the led, and pushed it in over the last 400m to win the WMC title as a freshman, running a fine 20:10, to equal the 13th fastest individual in course history. Sandreuter would fight back over the final 70m to get by Barton 20:16 to 20:17, Sandreuter time good for 20th fastest. Nichols would close to 4th, Lobely was 5th. Veroneau closed well like she always does to nab 6th, she was the top Class C runner in the field. Inhorn ran her best race of her season finishing 7th, with Becker leading Yarmouth in 8th, followed by Cape's #4 runner Tierney in 9th, Maggie Parrish finishe 10th, the first Falmouth runner across the line.

Teamwise, In Div 1 Cape Elizabeth dominated the meet, placing 4 in the top 9 and all 5 scorers in the top 18. Cape scored just 34 points to defeat runner-up Falmouth by 28 points.  York was just 9 points back in 3rd. In Div 2,  Yarmouth was impressive winning with 24 points, runner-up Waynflete scored 52.
