Class A Boys

#1 ranked Scarborough comes into the meet the favorite, the Red Storm won the Western Maine regional in impressive fashion, scoring just 38 points. For Scarborough they placed 4 runners in the top 10, and all 5 scorers in the top 17. Scarborough averaged 17:23 at Twin Brook which was 31 seconds per man faster than runner-up Massbesic. The Red Storm are no strangers to winning it all, they will be shooting to add their 4 title in 6 years. Eastern Maine Champion #6 ranked Mt. Ararat took the title by 10 points last week over #8 Mt. Blue. The Eagles will be looking to chase Scarborough but may have to settle for a state runner-up. Ararat last won the state title in 1994. They'll be pushed by Western Maine runner-up #7 ranked Massabesic, Mt. Blue & #10 ranked Gorham who will all be looking to make the push for some hardware. Massabesic may have the best top 2 out these teams with Brooks & LePage, although Gorham's duo of Marshall & Earl is right there. Ararat could edge ahead on the strenght of their 4-5 runners, Mt Blue has the closest pack 1-5 but they maybe lacking the front runner to get them a low score.

Individuals

Eastern Maine Champion Harlow Ladd (pictured left), withstood a nagging cramp to win last week, showing he's got toughness to go along with some real talent. Ladd has run 16:12 on the course earlier in the year, defeating all competitors in the meet. Because of this Ladd is the pre-meet favorite, but he's not expected to have an easy run to the title.  Look for Western Maine Champion Nick Morris to make a run for the title, Morris kicked his way to the title last weekend at Twin Brook. Earlier this fall Morris was 6th at the Festival of Champions, running 16:36. Will Lundquist of Cony had a great run last weekend, finishing just 10 seconds behind Ladd for the runner-up spot in the Eastern Maine Regional. Jakob Brooks the surprise of the Western Maine meet, was in the lead on the finishing straight before being passed, looks to be peaking at the right time. Also keep an eye on Jack Terwilliger one of the top distance runners in the state, he has been hampered by an IT band injury, but also gives it his all.

This race should be interesting, Ladd is a front-runner who will likely take the pace out hard, daring anyone to match him. Morris is more of a kicker, who puts himself into position to use his raw speed late in the race. Bryant Perkins (Sanford) took the Western Maine race out hard last week, look for him to be up front again. Logan Marshall (Gorham) is another that will be up front, he was 5th in the Western Regional last week.

Class A Girls

#1 Cheverus comes in the heavy pre-meet favorite, the Stags the defending State Champions will look to make it two in a row. Cheverus is undefeated on the season, and is running even better than last year when they rolled to the title. The Stags last week at the Western Maine Regional tallied just 31 points, highlighted by the 4 of the top 6 finishers overall, they averaged an impressive 19:50 for runners 1-5. Cheverus dominated at the FOC held on the same course, and have a shot to have 4 runners under 20 minutes, and most also a shot at the lowest 1-5 average for a team in the history of the state. #2 ranked Mt. Ararat looks to be the only team with a shot to take a run at the Stags. The Eagles put on a dominating performance in winning the Eastern Maine Regional last weekend, they scored 34 points, placing 6 girls in the top 13. Mt. Ararat averaged 20:22 for runners 1-5, they will need a little luck on Saturday to get the top prize. #5 ranked Massabesic will be battling for some hardware as well, the Mustangs nabbed the runner-up trophy at the Western Maine Regional last weekend. Massabesic hopes to get  a boost with Joecelyn Acheson back in the lineup, she's been out with an injury. #7 Windham has been the surprise of team of the year, the Eagles were 3rd last weekend, 21 points back of Massabesic. #8 ranked Bonny Eagle  was 4th last weekend, while #9 ranked Brunswick has turned in on in the postseason, they were the runner-up at the Eastern Maine Regional. #10 Mt. Blue was 3rd last weekend, will be looking to put it all together.

This is the deepest and most talented field in Class A in a long time, not only is there top individuals but the top teams are very good as well. This is the last race on the day, and it just may be the best one. Two of the at large New England bids should come from this race.  The Stags could make there mark as the best girls team ever.

3rd straight title? That is what Abbey Leonardi(pictured right) will be chasing on Saturday. The diminutive runner has been the state's best the last two years, and this year appears no different. Leonardi is undefeated on the year, winning the Western Maine Regional title last week, by going on slow and then hammering it home. A fast time may be on her mind here though, as she tries to go after that elusive course record of 17/:48, held by Cassie Hintz (Old Town). Leonardi is expected to be challenged by Emily Durgin of Cheverus, who has been the runner-up the last 2 years. Durgin was 20 seconds back last weekend at the Western Maine Regional, but was pretty much even heading into the last mile, she'll try to hold on for even longer this time, and hope she's ready for big race. With these two superstars battling it out up front, the host of other talent might not get the recognization it deserve. There is some excellent runners that will be looking for a top 5 finish, Fiona Hendry (Cheverus) 3rd at Western Maine, Eastern Maine Champion Katie McMahon (Brunswick) & freshman Shannon Conley (Cheverus). There could be a more than a handful under 20 minutes.

 Class B Boys

All eyes will be on this race as it is expected to be the closest team race with 4-5 teams with a legit shot at winning the state championship. Heading into the meet #2 ranked Greely, coming off a surprise win at the Western Maine Regional, is the pre-meet favorite if their is one. The Rangers packed 4 runners in the top 12 last weekend on their way to a 3 point win over #4 Cape Elizabeth. Greely was also running without #3-#4 runner Isaac Emery, with him back in the mix could give them another boost as they look to add their 4th straight title. If a team can score under 100 points they'll be on the fast track to winning. Cape Elizabeth fell just short last weekend, a mere 3 points away from Greely; they have  look to have the best top 3 in the field. Eastern Maine champion #3 ranked Caribou will be right there for the title as well, they won last weekend by 11 points, without their #1 Christian Sleeper having a great day. Sleeper is more than capable he ran 16:54 at the FOC. Caribou has only lost once all season to a Class B team, Falmouth @ FOC. Don't sleep on #5 Falmouth, they had been the top Class B team this year until they finished 3rd at the Western Maine Regional, they will be motivated to show everyone else last week was just a small hiccup. #11 Hampden, the Eastern Maine runner-up has an outside shot at the title.

With this many teams in it, the runners up front will need to do there jobs putting up those small numbers, but more than likely this meet will be decided by the #4 & #5 runners. Greely & Caribou look to have the best #4 runners in the field, and the Vikings will just a 42 split 1-5, have the tightest pack which could come into play. Greely adding Emery back into their lineup could be a huge boost. Falmouth will look for John Lake to rebound (been battling some calf issues), he ran 17:17 at FOC, he does that again, the Yachtsmen will be in good shape. The meet could come down to what team fights the hardest in the finishing stretch, one spot could mean the difference between no hardware and hoisting a state championship  trophy.

Individuals

Western Maine Regional Champion, Silas Eastman (picture on left) is the pre-meet favorite. Eastman,a sophomore, is undefeated this season and will be looking to run under 16 minutes. Last year as a freshman, Silas was the state runner-up, so this would be his first state championship. Eastman has taken each race out and dared people to run with him all fall, the closest anyone in Class B came was Falmouth's Tim Follo (Western Maine runner-up) at the WMC Championship, where he was 10 seconds back. Follo will be looking for a top spot, which will be key in his team's title chances. Freshman Dan Curts, the Eastern Maine Champion, has the message boards buzzing about his performance last week, where he tore away from the field in the last 800m to post an impressive 16:26 clocking on the Belfast course. Curts has shown he's not afraid to mix it up with the older kids, and expect him to be in the to pack this weekend.

 Class B Girls

#4 ranked Cape Elizabeth , won it's 8th straight Western Maine title last weekend, they will be looking to  make it 4 state titles in a row, and 5 of the last 6 this weekend.  The competition is expected to be very tight, as #3 ranked John Bapst, the Eastern Maine champion & #6 MDI, the Eastern Maine runner-up have strong teams that are expected to push Cape to its limits. Cape & Bapst look even through their first 3 girls, with Cape having the edge at #4, 7 Bapst at #5. MDI doesn't have a front runner but do have the closest pack 1:12 (1-5), and the best #5 runner in the meet. #10 Falmouth & #11 Yarmouth are also ranked teams in the field. Yarmouth earned the Western Maine runner-up trophy last week, edging by Falmouth by 2 points.

The key to the race will be how each teams top 3 run, Cape has the big meet experience having two seniors as their #1-#2 runners. Bapst has experience up front as well, while MDI is very youthful with a 3 freshman and a sophomore in the top 4.  Despite the youth MDI has been coming on strong the last two weeks, closing the gap down that Bapst had on them a few weeks ago, last week it was just 8 points. Cape still has the target on their backs though being the three time defending champions. It's wide open.

Two time defending Class B state champion Abby Mace (Maranacook pictured left)) will be shooting for #3, but this one may be her most difficult. Mace held on the win the Western Maine Regional title last weekend by just 3 seconds, for Mace she hadn't run on solid ground in two weeks due to a stress reaction in her lower left calf, and really felt the lack of training in the last mile at Twin Brook.  Mace admittedly knows she has her hands her full with Eastern Maine champion, Dacie Manion (Old Town). Manion has been on a roll this year, and last time out she ran a lifetime best 19:03 for 5k on the Belfast course. Can Mace find her legs or will someone else win the state title. There are others that will be in the mix, including Eastern Maine runner-up Alecia Palmer (PI), and then 4 freshman, Western Maine runner-up Kirsten Sandreuter, Heather Evans (York) 3rd at WM regionals, and Aleta Looker (Ellsworth) 3rd EM Regionals, Brittnay Bowman (Camden) 4th EM regionals.

Will Mace be able to defend her title? or will her lack of fitness prevent her from running with Dacie Manion, or can one of the four freshman shock the field. Stay tuned this should be an excellent race at the front.

 Class C Boys

#8 ranked North Yarmouth Academy is the heavy favorite to win the Class State meet. The Panthers are coming off a 24 point win at the Western Maine Regional last week. The key for NYA is it's strength up front, as they have one of the best 1-2 punches (Cam Regan & Evan Kendall). The Panthers last won the state meet back in 2002.  Top challengers are expected to be Western Maine runner-up Freeport. The Falcons don't have a front runner but a very close pack with an amazing 11 second split 1-5, no other team in the state is even close to this. Freeport will need to someone to emerge as a front runner if they want a shot at the title that eluded them by 1 point last fall. Waynflete 3rd in Western Maine is in a good position to make a run at the runner-up spot as well, the Flyers have a true front runner, and their top 3 rivals NYA. They'll need a big race of out their #4-5 runners to take home some hardware.

Individuals

Madison's Matt McClintock (pictured left) avenged his only loss of the season last weekend at the Western Maine Regional, when he captured the title for the 2nd straight year finishing 21 seconds in front Chase Brown (Boothbay). Brown handed McClitnock his only loss at the MVC Championship meet two weeks ago. McClintock took the FOC meet running 16:06 on the same course, he'll be setting his sights on a sub 16 performance on Saturday. Brown will be looking to repeat his performance at the MVC meet. Don't count out Abshir Horor (Waynflete), he had an off day at the regional meet, but showed he's in good form when he was just 7 seconds back of Silas Eastman at the WMC meet two weeks ago. Jack Pierce (Merriconeag) & Josef Holt-Andrews (Telstar) had strong days at the Western Regional. they were 3rd and 4th respectively.  Also look for Eastern Maine Champion Alex Bulteel (Orono) to be in the mix, Bulteel ran a seasonal best 16:43 in wining last weekend. the weekend before he was 2 seconds back of Dan Curts at the PVC Championship.

Class C Girls

Defending Class C State Champion Waynflete enters the meet with a chance to repeat as champions, they won the Western Mane title last weekend by one point over Merriconeag. The Flyers will rely on strength up front and a solid pack. Merriconeag has the best top 3 in the field, they'll need a strong performance from their #5 runner to hoist the trophy. If any of these team falter NYA or Freeport both from Western Maine would be in contention for some hardware.

Waynflete is no stranger to close wins, they won the state meet last year by one point over NYA. This one could come down to a single point again, which will make for great race.

Defending champion Martha Veroneau of Waynflete(pictured left) is looking to make it two Class C titles in a row, last weekend she showed she is in good form with her win at the WM Regional. Shell have her work cut out as freshman Carsyn Koch (Washburn) may be the pre-meet favorite. On the same course last weekend, Koch blitzed the field easily claiming the EM Regional title, when she clocked 20:14, her winning time 1:16 seconds faster than the runner-up. Winthrop senior Anna Doyle is in the mix too, she pushed Veroneau last weekend, falling just 5.5 seconds short, also Zoe Chace (Merriconeag) 3rd at WM Regionals will be in the mix.
