MaineTrackXC Junior Girls 2010 Rewind
6 of the top 10 5k performances in 2010 came from this talented junior class of girls. In addition there was one state champion, 2 state runner-ups, New England runner-up, Footlocker NE runner-up & 6 First team All-State selections. At the front of the class is Class A state champion Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk), Leonardi added an undefeated season en route to her 3rd Class A state title. Abbey clocked her best time of the season at the Class A state meet, just missing the course record at Belfast by less than a second, when she crossed the line in 17:49.01. Leonardi qualified for the Footlocker National Championships last weekend with her 2nd straight runner-up finish, this year she was 29 second faster on the same course, if this is any indication of the shape she is in, a top 5 finish at the national meet is well within reach. Emily Durgin (Cheverus) has another strong fall in which she was the Western Regional runner-up, Class A state runner-up & New England runner-up. Durgin led her team to a 2nd straight Class A title & then to a Maine best 4th place team finish at the New England meet. Emily's best time of the season came at the state meet when she clocked 18:03. Another Class A runner that stood out was Cheverus's Fiona Hendry, Hendry is one of the most talented harriers ever to run in Maine, but gets overshadowed with Leonardi & Durgin ahead of her. Fiona placed 3rd at SW Classic, 4th at FOC, 3rd in Western Maine Regional, 3rd Class A States, & 44th in New Englands. Hendry was named a MTCCCA first team All-State selection, and her 18:34 at the State meet was the 3rd fastest performer on the year. Abby Mace (Maranacook) had a great start to her junior year, then was hampered by a stress reaction to her left calf that limited her training and racing ability over the final month of the season. When healthy Mace was 4th at Manchester Invitational & 3rd at FOC, despite the injury she still gutted it out for a win at Class B Western Maine Regional & then a runner-up in the state meet. Mt. Ararat's Emma Wood had a breakout year and was a big reason for the success of the Class A runner-up Eagles. Wood ran her best in the championship meets placing 2nd in the KVAC & Eastern Maine championship meets, leading her team to victory. Emma went on to run her fastest time of the year at the Class A state meet 19:11 placing 5th overall, the time was the 8th fastest 5k time recorded on the year. Another standout from the junior class was Brunswick's Katie McMahon, who was one of the most consistent runners in the state in 2010. McMahon was 6th at FOC, won the KVAC & Eastern Maine Regional titles, placed 7th at Class A state meet, earned all New England honors via her 22nd place at New Englands, & was 42nd in the Footlocker NE regional meet. McMahon ran a seasonal best of 19:11, which was 6th fastest time in the state. There are many other talented runners in this class, the best thing is they'll be back for one more XC season!
Abbey Leonardi- Junior of the Year
A
Abbey Leonardi (pictured above) was the top HS girls runner in the state in 2010. Leonardi went undefeated on the year against Maine competition, winning the SW Classic, FOC, Western Regional & Class A State meet. Abbey's win at the state meet was her 3rd straight victory, setting her up for a run at 4 straight, a feat that is rarely accomplished. Leonardi clocked 17:49.01 at the state meet, her fastest time ever over 5k, and just off the course record of 17:48, she'll have one more shot at it next year at the FOC meet. Abbey's season isn't over yet, she qualified for the Footlocker National Championships in San Diego via her runner-up finish at the FL NE meet this past weekend.
2. Emily Durgin (Cheverus)
Emily Durgin (Cheverus) had another strong XC season this year. Durgin once again led her Cheverus Stags to a 2nd consecutive Class A State title, & also to All-time Maine best 4th place finish at the New England meet. Individually Durgin, was the runner-up at the SW Classic, FOC, Western Maine Regional & Class A State meet to Leonardi. Emily kept cutting the gap between her and Leonardi each meet, she ran her best time at the Class A state meet of 18:03. Durgin the defending NE champ, had a strong showing finishing 2nd to NXN qualifier & 5k indoor National champion Lindsey Crevoiserat of Glastonbury, CT. Emily also finished 24th in the FL NE regional missing out on a return trip to Nationals.
3. Fiona Hendry (Cheverus)
Fiona Hendry (pictured above) was one of the top runners in the state in 2010. Hendry was a key member of the Class A state team champions & 4th place New England team. Fiona placed 3rd at SW Classic, 4th at FOC, 3rd in Western Maine Regional, 3rd Class A States, & 44th in New Englands. Hendry's best time of 18:34 was good for the 3rd fastest performance of 2010.
