Scarborough Boys & Bonny Eagle Girls win Southwestern Titles

 SMAA SOUTHWESTERN CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS

The Bonny Eagle girls pulled the upset knocking off defendign champion Thornton Academy to win the Girls Southwestern Championship meet, The Scots tallied 124 1/2 points to win by 12 points. Scarborough rounded out the top 3 with 103 points. On the boys side, Scarborough repeated as champions, winning the title with 119.5 over Deering 98, & Bonny Eagle 97. The Scots of Bonny Eagle won 5 events and relied on it's depth across multiple event to surge past the pre-meet favorite Thornton Academy Trojans. Bonny Eagle scored in 16 of the 20 events. On the Boys side Scarborough won 7 events and scored in 19 of the 20 events

GIRLS

Maria Curit (Biddeford) goes out with a bang in the Sr. 400m as she smashes her previous league record of 61.9, with a crazy fast 61.2 to hold off a valiant effort by Peyton Dostie (Bonny Eagle) who clocked in at 61.7, also under the previous record

Thornton Academy scores 29 points in the shot put between the junior division (11) & a 1-2 sweep in the senior division (18) Abby Huntress 36-5 1/4 wins

 

Junior Shot went to Ashley Belanger (Biddeford) who despite a cast on her non throwing hand best the field by close to 2 1/2 ft with her 32-5 1/2 throw

Caroline Summa (Cheverus) clears 5-4 to set a new state leader, she then went for a new expo record 5-6 1/2

 

Emily Tolman (Scarborough) blitzes a fast 600yd clocking 1:30.6, one of fastest expo time in history

 

Scarborough's sprint squad sweeps 40's and 200's. In the junior Division Morgan Rodway claimed the 40yd title coming from behind to win in 5.53, while in the 200m she clocked a .5 personal best running 28.7

In the senior division Nicole Kirk was impressive clocking 5.38 in the 40yd final and then 28.2 in the 200m to win by more than a second

In the mile freshman Edie Pallozzi (Deering) ran a very strong race closing the last 400m in 77 seconds as she clocked state #2 time with her 5:23.9 personal best, after conversion her time is 5:17.9

The 2 mile was dominated by Charlotte Pierce(TA) as she led the entire race clocking 12:02.2, good for Class A #2 performance after conversion

In the junior hurdles Thornton Academy flexed some muscle placing 3 girls on the podium including run away winner Carly McKenna who clocked 6.82 to win by close to .2

The senior hurdles race was awesome as the first 2 were seperated by just .02. Peyton Dostie (BE) the #1 seed ran 6.73 while Sarah Perkins (Gorham) was timed 6.75

The winner of the Open 300yd race came out of section 3 as Gorham's Sarah Perkins crossed the line in 41.1

 Pre-meet

Record breaking Jr. Relay for the Noble Knights as they run 1:05.2 in 4x140yd relay to knock .4 off the old record set last year by Scarborough 

 

 

 

 

The individual race of the night was the fastest section of the Open 600 yard. #2 seed Joey Collins (BE) streaked to the early lead, as #1 seed Nick Morris (Scarborough) chased, Collins led all the way until the final 2 meters as Morris snuck by on the outside. Scarborough sealed the meet with a close down to the wire win in the Sr. Relay, The Red Strom clocked 2:14.6 to South Portland's 2:14.7  RACE VIDEO

 

Bonny Eagle capped off the meet with a fine performance in the open relay running 1:38.6 to win by more than a second  RACE VIDEO

 

Bonny Eagle shot putter Andrew Martel bested the field by 6" with his 47-3 heave, Andrew Libby (TA) had a big breakthrough as well finishing 2nd 46-9

 

In the junior Shot it was Deering's Jared Bell dominating the field with his 41-8 throw, 2 ft more than the runner-up

 

Scarborough was behind entering the 800's but got wins in Jr. 800m Robby Hall 2:10.3 & Sr. 800m Tom Hague 2:06.4

The senior 200m lacked the drama that we usually see, as top seed Renaldo Lowry (Deering)  & #2 seed Imadhi Zagon (Portland) opted for seperate heats. They both ended up running indentical time 25.0 so they had to share the top spot on podium

In the Jr. 200m Ethan Beaulier (Noble) the co-league record holder won the title & broke the conference record with his 25.5 clocking  RACE VIDEO

 

Senior 400m belonged to Scarborough's Scott Merrill as he was the only one under 56, with his 55.7 victory  RACE VIDEO

 

Jimmy Campbell (Cheverus) ran away with the Jr. 400m title clocking 57.7, & Cheverus placed 3 in the top 5  RACE VIDEO

 

 

In one of the closest races of the day Joe Viola (Scarborough) held off a late surge from Daniel Grazewski (SP) that left both athletes sprawled across the track afterwards, both were timed in 36.3  RACE VIDEO

 

Orin James of Scarborough cleared 6-2 to match the best jump in Class A this season  6-2 Clearance VIDEO

 

The first track event of the night was the 2 mile, Gorham's Jesse Orach set a blistering early pace as he was 2:24 at 800m, Orach would go on to win by 25 seconds 10:26.2  RACE VIDEO

 

In the mile Cheverus's Jack Terwilliger took the lead right from the gun and never looked back clocking 4:45.6 RACE VIDEO

 

Tyson Goodale (BE) broke his own junior hurdle record clocking 6.18 in the final RACE VIDEO

 

In the Sr. Hurdles Carleton Allen(Deering) blew away the field clocking 6.02, his teammate Tony Sen was 2nd 6.21  RACE VIDEO
