Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) MaineTrackXC Girls Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year

 

    MaineTrackXC has selected Abbey Leonardi as the girls outdoor track & field athlete of the year. Leonardi had a great outdoor season, running the top times in the state for the 1600 & 3200. Abbey won Class A titles in both events as well, making it three years in a row over the 1600m distance. The diminutive junior dominated her distance races this spring often winning by large margins, her winning margins at the Class A state were 13+ seconds in the 1600m & 52+ seconds in the 3200m. Abbey would go on to win the New England title for the 2nd straight year in the 3200m, setting a new New England meet record, along with a new Maine all-time best, with her 10:19.09. Leonardi would finish up her season with a 9th place finish in the 2 mile @ New Balance Outdoor Nationals running 10:29.84. her time was the 2nd fastest of her career over the distance. Abbey finished the 2011 season ranked #7 in the country for the 3200m distance & 55th in the nation for 1600m.
