Class A Girls 2011 State XC Meet Returners
It's hard to believe but the most talented distance runner in Maine history Abbey Leonardi (Kennebunk) is a senior this year, Leonardi is the 3 time defending Class A state champion, who will be in search of her 4th title in a row. If Abbey wins she will join some elite company of 4 time winners. Emily Durgin (Cheverus) has been running in Leonardi's shadow for 3 years and is coming off a injury filled junior year, Emily will be looking to get back to her Footlocker National qualifying form from her sophomore year. Durgin has been the bridesmade 3 times in the state meet, coould this be the year she adds the elusive title. Durgin is the only Maine runner to defeat Leonardi in an in-state XC meet.
While Leonardi and Durgin have been the at the front of the pack, they have raised the level of distance running throughout the state. Quietly Fiona Hendry (Cheverus) has had one of the best XC careers of any girl in state history, if she had been in a different era she would have mutliple state titles to her credit, but that hasn't stopped her from running some great times in her first 3 years, Hendry clocked 18:34 last fall to finish 3rd. Hendry's temamate Shannon Conley made a big splash last fall finishing 4th in the state meet, then going on to earn All-NE honors, while Mt. Ararat's Emma Wood had a great fall finishing 5th overall.
There is so much talent returning inlcuding 9 of the top 10 from 2010, and 12 of the top 15 as well. This doesn't include any new freshman who may have a big impact this fall. What does this mean? Well that the individual talent is at a high level, and we should see some great races. With the state meet being at Twinbrook this may play into the hands of the strength runners a bit more. Either way Class A girls race will be stacked!
On the team front, Cheverus the 2x defending champions are the overwhleming favorite to win its 3rd state title in a row. The Lady Stags return their entire state meet lineup in 2011, lead by the trio of Emily Durgin, Fiona Hendry, & Shannon Conley, the trio placed 2-3-4 in the meet last fall. 5 of the top 16 runners who are returning are from Cheverus. 2010 runner-up Mt. Ararat will have another strong squad in 2011, they have 3 of the top 15 returning harriers. There are 8 more teams who return at least 5 runners from the teams that competed at the state meet last fall, there would be 9 but Massabesic's #1 from last fall Charlotte Pierce has transferred to Thornton Academy. Either way the competition promises to be very good.
