Last fall was a frustrating one for 2 time Class B state champion Abby Mace of Maranacook who had dominated her competitors the previous two years, but had to deal with injury problems all fall that severly hampered her ability to get any quality training in. Mace gave it her best effort even though she was at less than 100%, while she didn't take home the state title, she did gut her way to a runner-up finish. Injuries continued to plague Mace this spring, but she recovered in time to clock a personal best 11:15.32 for 3200m at the New England championship meet, this was after winning the 1600m & 3200m Class C Outdoor track titles. Mace is hoping for an injury free fall, so she can get back to where she was when healthy-back to first place.
Challenging for the title will be sophomore Brittany Bowman (Camden Hills) who finished 3rd last fall as a freshman. With a year of experience under her belt look for Bowman to run even faster in 2011. Bowman's ended the outdoor track season with 4th place in the 3200m & 10th in the 1600m at the Class B state meet. Aleeta Looker of Ellsworth is another sophomore who had a great freshman campaign, Looker finished 4th overall last fall just behind fellow classmate Bowman. Aleeta followed up her XC with 800m state championship indoor & a runner-up outdoors. To keep the trend going on strong sophomores Kirsten Sandreuter (Greely) fits the bill, Sandreuter placed 5th as a freshman last fall. Kirsten will look to get past her classmates this fall, she is coming off two strong track seasonsincluding a 3rd place finish in the 3200 outdoors. Rounding out the top 5 returners is Adrienne Carmack (John Bapst) who finished 6th last year and in the process led her team to the state title, will be in the mix as well.
Teamwise the Class B girls team race looks to be a tight one. The top returning team based on 2010 state meet returners is Mt. Desert Island, who returns 6 runners from a squad that finished 3rd in 2010. MDI returns only 1 in the top 15 returners overall, but don't let that fool you, they have a talented pack of quality of runners. Yarmouth from the WMC returns 5 runners, and expects to be one of the top teams, they have 2 of the top 15 overall reurners. 2010 state champion John Bapst will be looking to defend the title they won last fall, the Crusaders return a talent squad led by Carmack & Lalime. Falmouth & Cape Elizabeth will also field strong teams in 2011, the Capers were the state runners-up last fall
