Boys XC Race at Laudholm Farms
The WMC XC regular season got underway Thursday at Laudholm Farms in Wells. Top-ranked Yarmouth dominated the boys' race as they placed four in the top five behind race winner Bowen Mitchell's 16:57 5k. Freeport's Mungu Tussing had a breakthrough race with his 17:03 second-place effort; he was followed by Jackie and Eli Chalmers of the Clippers. Freeport edged Cape for second in the team race, 86-88.
In the girls' race, Freeport placed four athletes in the top seven as they edged Yarmouth 44-50. Ella Oshetski took the victory as she ran from the front the whole race; she clocked 20:32. Fellow Falcon Maddy York was second in 20:44, followed by Fryeburg Academy exchange student Ann-Sophie Drescher in 20:46 and Stella Kryzak of Freeport in the same time.
At Scarborough on Friday morning, the Portland Bulldogs girls and boys put on an impressive display of team running as they scored perfect scores of 15 in both races. In the boys' race, senior Everett Smith pulled away in the late stages to win in 17:07 over Emile Olins by one second. Reid Hughes and Ambrose Clarke of the Bulldogs both ran 17:09 as the top 4 were separated by just 2 seconds.
The Portland girls showed they have the talent to repeat as Class A champions in 2026. Nora Schmidt cruised to victory as the sophomore clocked 18:57; she was followed by teammate Kate Morrison, who set a new 5k personal best of 19:31. The Bulldogs took the first six spots, all running under 22:03.
At the top of the state, the Greater Houlton XC Border Clash, the defending Class C champions Houlton/GHCA, opened with an impressive showing, taking five of the top seven spots. Pierce Gorneault of Caribou ran the fastest 5k in the state so far in 2026 with his 16:42.04 winning effort. Nathan Brady led the defending champion with a 17:22.40. Houlton/GHCA had a team spread of just 37 seconds for their top five.
In the girls' race, Emma Graves, a sophomore from Caribou, clocked 19:39.39 to win by over a minute. Freshman Lillian Johnson led Presque Isle with a runner-up finish of 20:59.12; the Wildcats had five of the top nine to claim the team win.
At Marancook, the freshman sensations ruled the day. Winthrop's Sawyer Wess broke the 17-minute barrier with his 16:50.90 winning time, as he bested the field by 35 seconds. He helped The Ramblers to a 35-37 win over the host team. Maranacook's Reagan Mattson added another win with a 19:35 effort; her winning margin was well over two minutes. She led the Black Bears to a team win.

Senior Georgia Moon of Falmouth opened her season with a dominating performance at Marshwood. Moon covered 5k in 19:08 to win by 1:30. Falmouth took the first three spots as they defeated Thornton Academy 24-38. Ryan Bolduc, a senior from Thornton Academy, captured the boys ' 5k with his 17:15.66; he led the Trojans to a 28-32 victory over Falmouth.
At Camden Hills, Lincoln Academy senior Karen Higgins ran the fastest 5k of the season so far with her 18:42.10; her winning margin was over two minutes. The Windjammers were the top team with 33 points. Junior Noah Seigh of Camden Hills won the boys' race in 17:22.10 as he led his team to victory, as the Windjammers had five of the top eight.
Mount Desert Island opened its season at the Ellsworth Invitational as the Trojans dominated with just 39 points. Junior Kulani Granholm led the way with a 19:32, with Antonia Burns second in 19:34. Dirigo senior William Morris ran away with the boys' race; he ran 15:27.24 to win by more than 90 seconds. George Stevens Academy was the top team.
At Bangor, Hampden Academy girls captured the top six spots to score a perfect score behind senior Addison Elliot's 19:31.03 winning time; her winning margin was over two minutes. Sam Bergmark, a senior for Bangor, was the fastest in the boys' race with his 16:47. Hampden Academy was the top team with five finishers in the top nine.
