Class B Boys

Individual: Defending champion Silas Eastman of Fryeburg had a close call at the WMC championship, he had to kick past Falmouth's Tim Follo for the win, at the WM regional a week later Eastman put his foot on the accelator early, and never was challenged. Eastman clocked the #2 time on the day with his 16:18.11, a fine performance in any conditions. He was 37 seconds better than runner-up Follo. The EM regional champion Dan Curts of Ellsworth figures to be in the mix as well, he is coming off a 37 second win.  Others who figure to contend for a top 5 spot are Nathan Maderia & Stefan Sandreuter of Greely, Matt Eager of Presque Isle, Mitchell Finitz of York & Peter Doane of Cape Elizabeth

Team

Last year's state runner-up Falmouth has been on mission all season, they have dominated all Class B compeititon throughout the year. The took the WM regional title last week with a score of 50, 38 points in front of surprise runner-up Cape Elizabeth. While Falmouth is the heavy favorite, the race for 2nd should be an intense one with 5-6 team with a legit shot at some hardware. York who finished 3rd in the WM regional was missing one of their top runner in Josh Brooks, with him back in the lineup the Wildcats should get a big boost. Cape had its best run of the season last week, they finished 5th in the WMC, but nabbed the runner-up spot in the WM regional. Also Greely will be right in the middle of it all too, teh Rangers were 4th in the WM regional but just 6 points back of 2nd, they have the best 1-2 punch in the meet. EM regional champion & defending state champion, Caribou can't be counted out, the Vikings have been the best in EM all season, and will be hungry to prove it against the West on Saturday. EM runner-up Ellsworth was just 4 points back of Caribou.  Freeport is another team to watch out for they had an off day at the WM regional but don't expect top runner Taylor Saucier to run over 19 minutes again, he's been the Falcons top runner all fall.

Class B Girls

Individual  This should be one of the best individual races on the day with 2x state champion Abby Mace of Maranacook back to top form against EM regional champion Bethanie Brown of Waterville. Mace brushed off a sub-par race at the KVAC championship last week to win the WM regional for the 4th straight time. Abby clocked 19:41, 35 seconds in front of the runner-up Heather Evans. Brown won the EM title breaking the 19 minute barrier (18:59.74), she was 24 seconds up on runner Brittany Bowman of Camden Hills. Brown scored a win over Mace at the KVAC meet so expect Mace to be motivated to turn the tables, & for Brown to shooting for her first xc state title. Others that figure to contend for a top 5 spot are the previously mentioned Evans & Bowman, along with freshman Willow Parker of Camden, Aleta Looker of Ellsworth & Kristina Smith of Poland.

Team

If the EM regional was any indication of how good the team race will be on Saturday the fans are in for a treat. Last weekend upstart Camden Hills edged MDI by 1 point to win the EM regional title, expect these two teams to duke it out again. They'll have some competition from the West as surprise WM regional champion Greely is peaking at the right time, and has the home course advantage over the East. Don't count out Cape Elizabeth who beat Greely at the WMC two weeks ago, or a strong Falmouth & York teams. Last week Falmouth edged York by 2, 7 Cape by 3 for the WM regional runner-up trophy. Camden Hills has the best 1-2 punch out of any of the teams, MDI has a tight pack, they had just a 42 spread last weekend for runners 1-5. While it looks like East teams may have the edge don't coutn of the West who will have the experience factor.
