MaineTrackXC Freshman Boys 2011 Rewind
This year's freshman boys didn't have the immediate impact of the 2010 class in the individual results but nonetheless their were several freshman boys who made an huge impact on their respective teams. Bangor freshman Jacob Archer had the best performance at the state championship for the class of 2015, Archer covered the 5k course in 17:59, good for 26th in the Class A race, he was the 3rd runner on the Class A runner-up Bangor Rams. Falmouth's Spencer Brown broke into the top 7 on the Class B State Championship Falmouth team, Brown was the 7th runner at the state meet but had the #2 time for freshman overall 18:00 to finish 26th. In Class C Matt Malcolm of NYA was the 4th runner for the Panthers as they won the Class C team title, Malcolm finished 23rd in the race, & clocked #5 time for freshman overall 18:28.
Individually during the season Caleb Lord (Hampden Academy) was a standout winning the Festival of Champions freshman race, his best time on the season was 17:45.52 in the Eastern Maine Regional where he placed 12th overall. Lord will be one to keep an eye on the next 3 years.
Top Freshman 2011 William Fletcher (MDI)
William Fletcher has been selected by MaineTrackXC as the top freshman for 2011. Fletcher had a very strong season starting the year running in the 19's for 5k & progressing down to the 17's. Fletcher showed he could run with the best freshman as he was 3rd at the Festival of Champions freshman race (17:57.94). He continued to get stronger with a 4th place finish at the Hancock county championship & then a 6th at the PVC Conference championship. He had perhaps his best race of the season at the Class B Eastern Regional where he ran a personal best 17:41.2 to finish 6th overall to qualify as an individual for the state meet. Fletcher's time of 17:41.2 was the fastest for all freshman during 2011. He would finish out the year with a 41st place finish at the Class B state meet, his time of 18:22.36 was the 3rd best freshman time at the state meet. The future look bright for Fletcher who will compete in the Footlocker Northeast race later this month
2. Spencer Brown (Falmouth)
Spencer Brown of Falmouth had a very strong freshman year running in the top 7 for the top team in Maine, the Falmouth Yatchsmen. Spencer finished 3rd in the freshman race at the Festival of Champions clokcing 17:54.12, good for 3rd place amongst the fresman & 29th overall. Brown progressed through the championship meets very well getting faster each one, he was 26th in the WMC championship, then was 23rd in the Western Maine B regional running 18:15 on the diffcult layout at Twinbrook, he followed that up with his best race of the season at the state meet where he finished 26th overall, 2nd best freshman with an outstanding time of 18:00. On any other team in the state Brown would have finished as a top 5 scorer.
3. Caleb Lord (Hampden)
3. Caleb Lord (Hampden) was a standout winning the Festival of Champions freshman race, his best time on the season was 17:45.52 in the Eastern Maine Regional where he placed 12th overall. Caleb finished 53rd in the Class A state meet placing 6th amingst all freshman in the state. Lord will be one to keep an eye on the next 3 years.
