Girls Southwesterns Championship Preview

The SMAA Girls Southwestern Maine Championship meet will take place outside of the expo for the first time on Saturday with the meet starting at 3:00pm with the opening ceremonies & national anthem. The field events will get underway at 3:30pm, followed by the first final of the afternoon  on the track the 4x800 relay at 3:45pm. Throughout the afternoon 25 individual & relay champions will be crowned culuminating with the presentation of the individual award winners & team champion at the conclusion on the meet.

Some of the state's top track & field talent will be on display incluidng state 55m hurdles, high jump & 200m leader Sarah Perkins (Gorham), Shot put state leader Ashley Belanger (Biddeford) as well as Class A state leaders Emily Tolman  (Scarborough) in the 800m, Fiona Hendry (Cheverus) in the mile, & Charlotte Pierce (Thornton Academy) in the 2 mile

Btatling it out for the team title will be two SMAA powers Scarborough & Thornton Academy. The Red Storm haven't won the title in 2 years & will be looking to get back on top, & build momentum heading into the state meet where they will be looking for their 8th straight Class A title. Thornton Academy who was 2nd last & the champion in 2010 look primed for another title run as well. Last year's champion Bonny Eagle should fare well and will be in the mix if the other teams slip up a bit.

Race to watch 1 Mile

The race features 7 of the top ten milers in Class A, including the Class A leader Fiona Hendry & Class A #2 Charlotte Pierce (Thornton Academy). Also in the field is defending champion Edie Pallozzi of Deering who claimed the title in 2011. It might take a sub 5:30 to even sniff the podium making this a race to key a watchful eye on.

Individuals to watch

Junior Division

Morgan Rodway (Scarborough) Rodway enters the meet with the top jr 55m time of 7.67, she also is top seed in the jr 200m 27.52, & will run on the #2 seeded jr. 4x200m relay squad

Tori Daigle (Thornton Academy) Daigle is the top seed in the jr. long jump 16-5 1/2, she leads the way in the jr. 55m hurdles as well with her 8.89. Tori also is the #3 seed in jr. 200m & will run on the #1 seeded girls jr relay squad. Daigle's marks in the hurdles, & long jump are both league records.

Carly McKenna (Thornton Academy) McKenna is a threat in several events, she has jumped 4" higher than her next competitor in the jr. hj with her jump of 5-2, Dagle is also ranked #2 in the jr hurdles 8.98,  #4 seed in the jr long jump 15-7 1/2, 7 will run on the top ranked jr relay team

Audrey Weyand (Bonny Eagle) Weyand is another verstaileathlete  who comes in with the top seed in the jr 400m 63.02, additionally she is the #2 seed in the 200m 27.88, & #2 seed in the jr. long jump 16-0 1/2. Audrey will also run on the #4 ranked jr relay

Shannon Conley (Cheverus) Conley is the top ranked jr 800m runner 2:26.88, and is also  #2 ranked in the 600yd 1:34.55. Additionally Conley will run on the #2 ranked 4x800 relay squad

 

Senior Division

Sarah Perkins (Gorham) Perkins has been dynamic this winter on her  way to 3 top seeds.  #1 seed in the 55m hurdles (8.60), #1 seed in the 200m (26.04), #1 seed in the HJ 5-2. Perkins is also the state leader in all 3 events. Her times on the track have established new league records as well. 

Nicole Kirk (Scarborough) Kirk enters the meet as the top seed in the sr 55m 7.54, & also has the #2 seed time in the sr. 200 26.70. Additionally she is the anchor leg on the top ranked sr 4x200m relay team

Emily Tolman (Scarborough) Tolman has the top seed in the 600yd by over 5 seconds, her time of 1:29.37 is one of the fastest ever times in state history. Emily also comes in with the top seed in the sr. 800m 2:25.79, and ranks #2 in the sr long jump 16-2, addiitonally she run on the 3rd ranked 4x800 squad

Marie Vermund (Thornton Academy) Vemund is the top seed in the sr long jump with her 16-5 leap, 7 ranks #2 in the sr triple jump 33-3 1/2. Marie also is ranked #3 seed in sr 55m hurdle 9.58 7 will also run on #3 ranked sr 4x200 relay team

Charlotte Pierce (Thonrton Academy)  Pierce enters the meet as the top seed in the 2 Mile 11:29.31 & the #2 ranked miler 5:20.16

Fiona Hendry (Cheverus) Hendry is the top seeded miler @ 5:15 she is also the #2 seed in the 2 Mile 11:39.72, & will run a leg on the #2 ranked 4x800 relay
