Hi Everyone!
I will once again be writing a blog, this time for the outdoor track season. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Abby Mace and I'm a senior distance runner at Maranacook High School in Readfield (near Augusta). Next year I will be running for UConn (along with Emily Durgin) and I'm really looking forward to it! But, I still have a couple of months left of high school and I'm enjoying every last moment.
Most of you probably had your first meet last week and I hope it went well for everybody! It felt great to get back into racing mode, and I was surprised by how much faster my times for the first meet were compared to previous years (that's not saying much, though, because it usually takes me a while to get back into running shape after ski season ends). I was especially surprised because I chose to do some post season meets for skiing that ended mid-march. More importantly, the first meet was great for my team to get out and compete especially because we have so many new members. A few years ago, Maranacook moved to Class C for track because we had so few people on the team, but since then the numbers have been increasing. This year, we have 63 athletes! Thursday was the first meet ever for a lot of my teammates, and I enjoyed watching them try new events. We have a big group of hurdlers and throwers this year, which is rare, and some more sprinters and distance runners. I'm especially excited about the new distance runners because I'll have some more girls to train with this year. Last year, my teammate Laura (who goes to Kents Hill so she can't even score for Maranacook) and I were the only female distance runners on the team!
I hope everyone had a relaxing vacation...enjoy what is left of it, and keep training!
-Abby Mace
