Cheverus Boys & Scarborough Girls take SMAA Cumberland County Titles

Cheverus Boys & Scarborough Girls top in SMAA Cumberland County Meet

 

The Cheverus Stags made a statement on the boys side in winning the SMAA Cumberland County Championship, as they showed they have the talent and depth to win the Class A state championship in 2 weeks. Cheverus got 3 relay wins, two of them in state leading times (4x800 & 4x400), as well as a pair of victories in the sprints from Jackson McMann (100m & 200m), along with wins from Matt Cushing in the javelin, Brady Foshay (800m), & Jimmy Campbell (400m).

Gorham was the runner-up, they got 2 wins in the distance races from senior Jesse Orach (1600M & 3200m), while Nate Bucknell took first in the racewalk to lead a 1-2-3 finsih for the Rams. The other Rams of Deering had a very string showing as well. Scarborough finished 3rd, they were led by 24 points from Kevin Manning who won the pole vault. Deering dominate the Shot Put taking the top two places with Bryan White throwing a seasonal best 49-8 1/2 to edge teammate Jared Bell 49-5. Bell throwing for the first time in meet all season (plays baseball) won the discus too (147-1 1/2).

Another standout performer was Patrick Rice of Windham who won the 110m hurdles, as well as the 300m hurdles, then added another in the triple jump. Westbrook's Magnes Lewis had a strong day with a 6-0 clearance for the win the high jump, & a winning leap of 20-6 in the long jump.

 

On the girls side traditional power Scarborough came out on top again, The Red Storm were paced by seniors Nicole Kirk & Emily Tolman. Kirk won the 100m & 200m races, while Tolman took the 400m & LJ, while adding 3rd in the 800m. Both combined on the 4x400m relay to close the meet with another victory. Also aiding the cause for Scarborough were wins by Catherine Bailey in the Pole Vault (10-0) & Halela Booth-Howe in the javelin (102-4). The Red Storm also added wins in the 4x100 & 4x400.

The runner-up was Gorham, the Rams got a win from Sarah Perkins in the 100m hurdles, although she felt something in her quad after the race, so she didn't compete the rest of the night. Also winning for Gorham was Katie Falnders in the racewalk, she led a 1-2-3-5 finish for 28 points in the event.

Other Standouts on the night were Hannah Damron of Windham, who won the 300m hurdles in 47,63 & added a win in the triple jump 33-4 1/2. she led her team to a 3rd place finish.

Cheverus finished 4th but they had plenty of top performers. Katie Shapiro won the discus 115-4 3/4 & the shot put. Also winning for the lady stags were Fiona Hendry (1600m), Emily Durgin (3200m) & the 4x800m relay
