Missed the Boys race? Here you go
The Massabesic Mustangs have been one of the top teams in the state this fall. On Saturday at the Western Maine Regional at Twinbrook they made a statement to the rest of the state that they maybe the best! The Mustangs ran with purpose right from the gun as they had all 5 guys in the top 10 at the mile, and would finish the race with 5 of the first 11 runners across the line leaving no doubt as to what team had won the race.
The pace of the race went out conservative as the first mile was in the 5:30's, this meant there was a large pack of runners all together at the mile.
Leading the way for Massabesic was the duo of George Morrison & Michael Aboud who would finish a surprising 1-2 in the race. Morrison often the Mustangs #2 runner and Aboud the #3 took there running to another level. "I told Michael before the race that if we were in near the lead at 2 miles we were in trouble"- Morrison would say post race. Well Morrison & Aboud found themseleves in the lead at 2 miles with Biddeford's Cam Nadeau in tow. Morrison & Aboud would pull away in the final mile with Morrison holding off Aboud 17:29.66 to 17:29.93.
Nadeau would finish 3 seconds back in 17:32 while Scarborough's Robby Hall was 4th overall (17:42).
Marshwood's Jack Lettelier had a big day finishing 5th, next was Scarborough's Jack Sullivan in 6th (17:51).
Ben Allen of Portland was 7th followed by the Massabesic duo of Cody Vachon (18:00) & Andrew Mongiat (18:01).
Rounding out the top ten was Biddeford senior Tom Laverierre (18:02)
This sets up an interesting team race next week, Massabesic has surged as the favorite with their performance this weekend. Scarborough has been in this position before losing a regional meet only to come back the next week to win the state meet, don't count the Red Storm out. Also they had runner Ian Morris fall in a ditch and he was unable to finish, he would have been the #4 and possibly #3 runner for them.
Marshwood had a fine day to finish 3rd while a young Gorham team showed some potential with a 4th place finish.
Good news for South Portland senior Max Knutsen who finished 31st, he would have missed the state meet but his teammates came through with a 7th place finish so he'll run at the state meet.
Bad news for Cheverus who finished 9th as a team, one of their top runners Brady Foshay couldn't finish the race. He was treated for a cut on his leg post race.

Missed the girls race? We got your back
Thornton Academy senior Charlotte Pierce set the early pace in the Class A girls race but was closely followed by fellow senior Nyajock Pan of South Portland. While these two set the pace a surprise face was right behind them, freshman Katie Leblanc of Thornton ACademy.
At the mile Pierce continued to push the pace with Pan right on her back. Leblanc was 3rd with Massabesic Joecelyn Acheson in 4th. In the pack behind them was Shannon Conley (Cheverus) & the Bonny Eagle duo of Samantha Cox & Mary Szatkowski.
By the 2 Mile mark Pan with her short fast stride had pulled into the lead, but the freshman Leblanc was running with great poise a few strides back in 2nd. Conley & Szatkowski were running 3 & 4 followed by Pierce in 5th, Acheson 6th & Cox 7th.
Over the final Mile Pan would pull away for a comfortable victory. The senior had the fastest girls time of the day 19:52. 9 seconds back would be Leblanc who ran a fanstatic race showing a lot of poise for her first big championship meet.
Shannon Conley would move into 3rd over the mile just ahead of Szatkowski (20:07 to 20:09), Acheson would move up one spot in the final mile to finish 5th (20:11)
BE's Cox moved up to 6th while the early leader Pierce came home in 7th
Cheverus's Kiera Murray returned from injury to have a strong race as she moved well in the final mile for 8th (20:45)
Freshman Casey Loring had a strong showing in 9th while Bonny Eagle's Kristen Glennie rounded out the top ten
The team race was close between 3 teams. The Scots of Bonny Eagle the pre-meet favorite had enough to win the Western Class A title with a score 58, which was good enough for a 11 point win over regional runner-up Massabesic, while Cheverus the defending state champ showed it can't be counted out next week as they were 3rd with 72.
BE had 4 in the top 14 which bodes well for them at next week's state championship, Massabesic countered with 4 in the top 15. It's going to be a close an exciting race next week.
South Portland was 4th with TA, Marshwood, Windham & Sanford punching their tickets to the state meet next weekend
