hile her time of 18:46 was almost a minute slower than the course record Bethanie Brown's performance is amazing considering the course conditions. The state's best distance runner dominated the class B field at the Eastern Maine regional, her winning margin was an astonishing 1:28! & she would have placed top 10 in the boys race
While Brown was out front running away with her second straight EM title, Aleta Looker of Ellsworth was enjoying the mud as she ran to a runner-up finish 20:14. Behind her was Camden Hill's Brittany Bowman who crossed in 20:34.
Caribou's Mackenzie Belyea returned to action with a fine 4th place performance (20:55), a few strides behind her was Abby Hersom of Oceanside (20:57)
Next came a pair of Windjammers as seniors Emily Lopez & Hannah Brownawell took 6th & 7th, they were followed by a pair of Trojans as MDI's Waylon Henggeler & Olivia Erickson
Rounding out the top ten was senior Adrienne Carmack of John Bapst who clocked 21:24
The Biggest surprise might have come in the team results as defending champions Camden Hills repeated as champions over favorited Mt Desert Island. The Windjammers tallied 51 points & were led by 3 runners in the top 7.
MDI the pre-meet favorite hasd to run without their #1 runner Maggie Painter due to illness, with her back in the line-up the meet would have been much closer. With Painter out MDI slipped to 3rd with 78 points. This sets up an epic state meet, last year MDI lost by a point at regionals. They rebounded with a dominating performance at the state meet a week later, what will this year have in store?
Waterville had a huge day as they showed they can run in tough conditions. Last week they were 24 points behind Camden Hills at the KVAC meet, today they cut the marhgin to 14. The Purple Panthers scored 65 points to earn the runner-up plaque.
Caribou had a strong dayt as they were back to full strength the Vikings were 3 points back of MDI with 81 points.
John Bapst was 5th followed by Winslow & Ellsworth
