Boys Recap

The anticipated battle between Massabesic, Lewiston & Scarborough turned out to be a barn burner but in the end the Mustangs pulled away for a 9 point win over the EM champion Lewiston & two time defending champion Scarborough. For Massabesic it was their first boys state xc title in the school’s history

The individual race was wide open coming into the meet, but in the end it was Biddeford senior Cam Nadeau who open up a lead right before the 2 mile with a big surge, and held on for a 3 second win 16:36 to 16:39 over Scarborough senior Robby Hall.  Nadeau established himself in the lead pack from the gun, and never was out of the top 4 at any point in the race. For Nadeau the race was redemption for his 3rd place finish in the WM Regional championship. He knew that pushing the first mile would benefit him and that’s exactly what he did.

Scarborough’s Hall ran a patience race that saw him come through the mile 5:07 which had him close to the top 10. “I wanted to go out slower than I did at FOC, and while I still was faster than I would have like too, I felt good!”, Hall said post race.

EL’s Lucas Bourget had his best race of the season to finish 3rd. The senior got out well with the leaders, and then he started to push the pace just after the mile to take the lead. Bourget would maintain his turnover throughout to run a season best of 16:47 kicking past Mt. Blue's Josh Horne  A week ago he placed 11th at EM Regional so it was quite a turnaround for the senior.

Mt. Blue Josh Horne completed a storybook season that ended with 4th place finish, he was the by far the most improved runner in the state this fall.

Lewiston’s trio of Mohamed Awil, Isaiah Harris & Mohamed Barre continued their strong running placing 5-7th to give the Blue Devils an impressive finish up front. They were by the far the best top 3 for any school in the state.

Hampden Academy's Caleb Lord had a great run to finish 8th running 16:55.

The WM Regional champion George Morrison broke 17 minutes for the first time in his career for a 9th place run, he was followed by Justin Tracy of Mt Blue who rounded out the top 10.

Massabesic got another strong race from George Morrison & Michael Aboud up front (9th &11th). Sophomore Remi Gaetjins who ran 5th for the Mustangs a week ago was the #3 man today stepping it up even more. Senior Cody Vachon finished 26th & sophomore Andrew Mongiat rounded out the scoring 5 in 28th place. The Mustangs tallied 82, good enough for the first boys state xc title in school history.

For Lewiston who placed 4 runners in the top 15, it was bittersweet to finish on the podium as they had been focused on winning the state title all season. Coach TJ Niles was glad the team was on the podium for their efforts. Lewiston was the only team in the state with 3 runners under 17 minutes.

The two-time defending champion Red Storm got strong races up front from seniors Robby Hall (2nd) & Jack Sullivan (12th), but it wasn’t enough to get by the Mustangs & Blue Devils.

Massabesic via their win advanced to the New England Championship as did Lewiston & Scarborough. Scarborough ended up finishing 2nd in the combined team results, while Lewiston placed 3rd.

Girls Recap

The Scots of Bonny Eagle started fast in the Class A girls race as they had 4 in the top 10 early on. The fast start was just what they needed as they prevailed by 21 points over Massabesic to win the school’s first Class A xc title.

In the individual race Bonny Eagle’s Samantha Cox took the race out hard with her teammate Mary Szatkowski, Lawrence’s Erzsebet Nagy, Thornton Academy's Charlotte Pierce, Cheverus's Shannon Conley & Nyajock Pan of South Portland in tow at the 800m. Pierce would take over the lead heading into the mile

Coming out of the woods it was Nyajock Pan & Nagy running stride for stride. They were followed by the BE duo, then Conley. Massabesic's Joecelyn Acheson moved up to 6th. Pierce ran in 7th with freshman Tessa Cassidy of Brunswick 8th followed by Cheverus's Kiera Murray in 9th. Freshman Casey Loring of South Portland was 10th will a little over half way through the race.

Nagy of Lawrence the EM regional champion ran a patience race, and it paid of the second half of the race. A week ago Erzsebet went out too fast the first mile which caused her to be near exhaustion at the end of the race. Like a good student of the sport, she learned from her mistake and executed to perfection this week. Her winning time was 18:50

Pan held on for the runner-up finish to complete a great post season run that included a WM regional title a week ago, her time was 19:01

Massabesic’s Jocelyn Acheson closed the last 800 in impressive fashion as she moved up from 6th all the way to 3rd almost catching Pan at the line (19:04). Szatkowski finished 5th (19:09), she was closel followed by Conley (19:10)

Cox of BE held on for 6th, Murray moved up one spot to 7th, Pierce ran to a 8th.

Cassidy, who was the the top freshman, held on for a top 10 in 9th, while Gabby Johnson nabbed the 10th spot moving up well over the last half.

Bonny Eagle was led up front by the 4-6 finish of Szatkowski & Cox. #3 runner Kristen Glennie had a strong race finishing 13th. Lexi Vayda was the #4 runner at 16th, while Aufrey Weyand rounded out the scorers in 34th.

Massabesic & Cheverus tied for 2nd, but the Mustangs ended up with the plaque based on a better 6th runner. The Mustangs had the better 1,3,4 runners while the Stags countered with the better 2,5 runner. Each team finished 87, 21 points back of the winners BE.

Brunswick was the top EM school in 4th they finished in front of EM champions Hampden Academy 147-158.

Bonny Eagle moves on to the NE Championships in two weeks, Massabesic & Cheverus also qualified.
