Gorham Boys & Scarborough Girls Win Cumberland County Championships | 5 new State leaders May 22, 2011

The Gorham Rams boys & the Scarborough Red Storm girls took home SMAA Cumberland County Team Championships on Friday night under the lights at Scarborough. Gorham did it with a 1-2-3 finish in the racewalk & 3200m, and got plenty of other strong performances to score (138) to hold off runner-up South Portland (118) and 3rd place Scarborough (115). On the girls side, the Red Storm dominated the sprints, and got two wins from Emilia Scheemaker in the jumps to tally (158) to down runner-up Cheverus (131) & 3rd place South Portland (74). Two new state leaders came at the end of the meet with the Scarborough girls running 4:08.39, while the Scarborough boys behind a 50.9 anchor carry from Scott Merrill clocked 3:32.86. Leading off the meet the Cheverus boys behind a sub 2 anchor from Jack Terwiliger ran 8:21.8. Also clocking a new state leader was Sarah Perkins (Gorham) in the 300m hurdles, Perkins ran 47.03 while Emily Tolman (Scarborough) became the first girl under 60 this year with her 59.51 win.
