State Champion spotlight: Judson Smith Foxcroft Academy

Senior Judson Smith competed during indoor for the first time this winter, and despite an ankle sprain was able to win the Class B state title in the high jump. Smith also scored in the long jump (2nd) & triple jump (6th). We caught up with him to ask about his preparations, his goals for the season and the upcoming outdoor season.

What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

Leading up to the meet I was jumping daily on the mats with limited attempts. The emphasis was on being able to adjust my technique to the higher heights.

How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

I have been in a few outdoor state meets and New England meets so I was OK with the pressure not much actually I knew what I had to do and it was mostly preparation that helped ease my mind. I was confident with my jumps.

You only jumped in 2 meets all season, but jumped a state best of 6-6 and won the state title. Can you talk about your decision to do track, I know you missed the football season due to an injury? What did it mean to win the state title, even though you had an injured ankle?

Initially I wasn't going to do indoor track because of possible conflicts with my basketball schedule. But once I sat down with our athletic director I found that the schedules rarely overlapped so I was able to go to basketball practice and still get some jumps in. I missed some of the regular season meets and was able to come to some towards the end of the season. I was able to qualify for states but missed PVC's due to a bad ankle sprain in my last regular season basketball game. After some recovery time I was able to compete at states on a bummed ankle but was successful.

Coming into the season what were your goals and did you achieve them?

My goals coming in were honestly to get some jumps in and get myself a jumpstart for outdoor track.

Your headed to Umaine to play football next fall, will you be competing during the outdoor season? And if so what are your goals?

Going into outdoor I am hoping to better my personal best in my events and hopefully contribute to the teams shot at a state title
