2023 Outlook

Cape was on cloud nine after the Southern Regional a year ago as they hoisted the champions plaque after winning on the sixth runner tie-breaker over Lincoln Academy. The joy was short-lived as a week later after illness tore through the school leaving many athletes at less than 100% when they toed the line, and of course, defending champion Hadley Mahoney was unable to go. Cape Elizabeth battled well to finish sixth a year ago in the Class B state meet. Mahoney hasn't run since the Regional as she has battled injuries, if she can return to form in October that will be the key for the Capers. Fellow senior Emma Young had a breakthrough XC a year ago that saw her finish seventh in Class B. Emma was the indoor 800m runner-up clocking 2:22.63. During the outdoor season, she ran 11:48.38 for 3200m, and 5:20.40 for 1600m both personal bests. Look for Cape to get better as the season goes, and once at full strength, they will match the success of a year ago, and hopefully line up the state meet healthy in 2023 with a shot at a state title.

Coach Andrew Lupien's Comments

I think summer training went well.  We have a motivated group of young ladies who enjoy getting together to run.  They built a solid foundation this summer, and we will continue to build on that early in the preseason. After a disappointing end to last season, the girls are extremely excited to start the season.  We are bringing back most of our top ten from last season, so we expect to be one of the top teams in the conference...but we know that we need to tighten up our pack.  Our 3 through 10 runners will work hard, and if they show marked improvement, then we should do really well. We are adding 10th grader Hannah Frothingham to the team this fall.  She did not run last fall but did run with the distance runners last spring.  She had a solid outdoor track season and should be a varsity-level runner this fall.
