KVAC XC CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
Class A Girls
Freshman sensation Anne Guadalupi of Cony has had a great freshman year that sees her enter the KVAC XC Championship with the fastest 5k in the field this fall. Guadalupi who won the freshman race at FOC with her best time of the yeat, 19:21. Anne will also have the home course advantage, she has alreayd run a fine 20:51 effort 3 weeks ago on the course.
Last year's runner-up was freshman standout Tessa Cassidy of Brunswick who has a best time of 19:39 this fall. Cassidy will look to challenge Guadalupi for the top spot. Cassidy's teammate Teresa Murhpy is another threat for the individual title, Murphy's best time on the year is 19:47, she didn't get to compete at FOC this year due to SAT's but is coming off a 14 second win over Cassidy at the Camden Hills Invitational.
Other contenders for the top 5 are Elizabeth Labun (Hampden Academy), Farhiyo Aden (Lewiston), & Maggie Hickey (Mt Blue)
The team title looks to be close with Brunswick, Hampden Academy & Lewiston all with a strong chance. The Dragons of Brunswick were the runner-ups a year ago, they have the best 1-2 punch of any team with Cassidy & Murphy, they have a slight edge over the rest of the field. Hampden Academy is coming off a win at the Pendale Invitational, and a 12th place finish at FOC where they were one spot and 31 points in front of Lewiston.
Class A Boys
The Mt Blue dynamic duo of Aaron Willingham & Josh Horne will be looking to set a fast pace at the front of the pack as they have done all year long. Willingham, a junior has made quite an impression in his first season of XC in Maine, twice running under 16 minutes for 5k, with his best effort of 15:42 coming at FOC. Horne has been no slouch either as he broke the 16 minute barrier at FOC with his personal best 15:54. Willingham has gotten the better of Horne the last 2 times out but Horne is the only Class A runner to beat Willingham this season. Expect the duo to work together as they go for a 1-2 finish on the tough Cony course.
If anyone is going challenge the Mt Blue duo they will likely wear Blue or Maroon. Lewiston has several threats which happens when you have 5 runners who have run 16:54 or faster this fall. 800m specialist Isaiah Harris has shown even more improvement in his 2nd xc season, he's coming of a personal best 16:21 at FOC. Other Blue Devil teammates that will be in the front pack are Mohamed Awil, Mohamed Mohamed, & Farhan Abdillahi. Messalonkee's Logan Moses figures to be in the mix along with Bangor's Jonathan Stanhope.
There is great depth in KVAC Class A as the battle for the top ten will be intense. How deep? Well 13 runners have broken 17 minutes this fall. Keep an eye on runners like Caleb Lord (Hampden), Dan Lesko (Mt Blue), Sam Wood (Mt Ararat), Luke Rand (Brewer) & Osman Mohamed (Lewiston) all who have rununder 17 minutes for 5k this season.
Lewiston the #1 ranked team in the state is the heavy favorite to win the team title. According to the virtual meet, the Blue Devils are 72 points favorites based on 2013 5k times. The real race will be for the runner-up podium finish. 4 teams (Hampden Academy, Mt Blue, Bangor, & Brewer) are tightly packed together. Bangor edged Mt Blue by less than a second at the Mt Blue relays. At FOC, Brewer led the way with 382, Mt Blue was next with 391, Bangor was 3rd with 400, & Hampden next with 401.
Class B Girls
The race for the individual title will be a good one in KVAC Class B. Oceanside's Abby Hersom enters as a slight favorite after placing 4th a year ago. Hersom has the fastest 5k in the field in 2013, 19:52. Right behind her is Camden Hills senior Brittany Bowman, who is no stranger to running well in championship meet, a year ago Bowman finished 2nd to Bethanie Brown. In 2013 Brittany has a best of 20:02. Freshman Emma Trapani started the year running some fast times, but she's been sidelined with a foot injury, and most likely will have to miss the meet. While Maranacook junior Hannah Despres is another who will contend, Despres has a best of 20:09 this fall. At FOC, Hersom was the top finishers out of this group.
Camden Hills enters as the favorite, and is the defending champion, however they are dealing with some injuries that will likely weaken the lineup for the WIndjammers. The Black Bears of Maranacook are just 2 points behind Camden in the virtual meet, and with a healthy lineup are primed for a top finish.
Class B Boys
Defending champion Ben Trapani of Camden Hills is the favorite to repeat on Saturday. Trapani who clocked 16:20 at FOC to finish 15 seconds in front of Waterville junior Chris Cote (16:35). Cote is the only other runner in the field under 17 minutes for 5k this fall. Last year Trapani eeked out a .5 second win over Christan Heath of Gardiner with a furious finishing kick, this year he hopes to enjoy the finish stretch a bit more. Cote placed 3rd last year.
Contenders for the top 5 include Chris Walfield of Morse, Austin Landry of Marancook, & Avery Genus of Lincoln Academy. Out fo this group Walfield edged them by 7 seconds at FOC, with Landry & Genus is a near dead heat, both clocked at 17:13
Maranacook the defending champion is the favorite to win the team title. The Black Bears are seeded to score 60 points. Morse & Lincoln Academy are seperated by just 1 point 82-83, The Shipbuilders edged LA at Festival of Champions.
