In her first year of running xc Bonny Eagle sophomore Kialeigh Marston has shown the move from the soccer pitch to the trails was a good move
Satruday's state championship further cemented that idea as Marston ran to a 6 second victory in her first state xc meet.
Marston covered the 3.1 mile layout at Twin Brook in 19:34.16 to hold off a challenge from South Portland's Shannon Conley.
Freshman Anne Gaudalupi of Cony set the early pace and continued to led by a few seconds at the mile. Behind her there was a giant chase pack that included Marston, Elizabeth Labun (Hampden Academy), Shannon Conley (SP), Mary Szatkowski (BE) and a pair of Massabesic teammates Gabby Johnson & Angel Waters.
By the time the runners returned to the finger loop in the B loop, the lead pack had become 4, as Guadalupi continued to lead with Conley, Martson & Szatkowski breathing down her neck.
Conley moved to the front at 2 mile mark and the race was on. Only Marston would be able to match the increase in pace from Conley, the two would battle it out in the back hills.
In the end the sophomore had to much strength as she crossed the line first, followed by Conley. This was a big bounce back from the senior from South Portland, who dropped out of last weekend WM Regional due to high blood sugar, she wouldn't be able to compete today if her team hadn't qualified. She took full advantage of a second opportunity, and will get to run in the New England Championship next week,
Closing very well over the final mile was Cheverus senior Kiera Murray, who went from 9th at the 2 mile all the way to 3rd place, her time was 19:49. Szatkoswki finished 4th (19:54) with Gabby Johnson in 5th (20:02.03)
Maddy Doyle of Marshwood had a strong effort to finish 6th, 20:02.14 with Angel Waters in 7th (20:03), They were followed by sophomore Casey Loring (South Portland) in 8th, next was Elizabeth Labun (Hampden Academy) with early pace setter Guadalupi rounding out the top 10 (20:15).
Bonny Eagle the defending state champions, paceed by the 1-4 effort of Marston & Szatkowski earned a 18 point win over the runner-up Mustangs of Massabesic
Through 2 runners, The Scots had a 5-12 lead. Kristen Glennie of BE was the 3rd Scot across the line in 12th (20:37). Massabesic countered with Emily Wasina (29th) & Maquila Dimasrantonio (30th), but Zoe Goodwin came up big for Bonny Eagle finishing 32nd.
That gave Bonny Eagle a 46-67 advantage, Rochelle Morrison crossed in 35th completing the scoring for the Mustangs but 6 second later the Scots 5th runner, Kyaunna Libby finished to seal the deal
Falmouth rebounded from an off week at the Western Maine Regional to finish 3rd just 7 points back of Massabesic, while Brunswick the Eastern Maine champion was 4th (127) with Hampden Academy (!29) rounding out the top 5.
Boys Recap
Two years ago Josh Horne of Mt Blue ran a 18:58.47 in the Eastern Maine Regional to end his first xc season, last year he moved all the way to 4th best in Class A.
Horne capped off a remarkable two year ascent in the sport of xc with a Class A individual title on Saturday at Twin Brook. Josh took the lead early on and was never challenged as he clocked the only sub 17 performance in the Class A race with his winning 16:43.79.
Aspiring xc runners should take note of Horne's progress, it was nothing but hard work and a lot of miles. Also he had some great training partners the last two years with Justin Tracy last year, and Aaron Willingham this year.
As he has done all year long Horne pushed the pace right from the beginning, by 800m it was a three man race as only Logan Moses (Messalonskee) & Aaron Willingham (Mt Blue) decided to go with the pace
At the mile he had opened up his lead to 6 seconds over Moses & Western Maine champion Ryan Cadorette (Thornton Academy). They were followed by a chase of Jesse Southard (Gorham), Scott Lambert (Falmouth), & Dan Lesko (Mt Blue)
Horne continued to open up his lead extending it to 19 seconds by mile 2. Johnathan Stanhope (Bangor) had taken over at the front of the chase pack, with Celb Lord (Hampden Academy), Sam Wood (Mt Ararat), Cadorette, Lambert & the Lewiston duo of Isaiah Harris & Mohamed Awil
The gap would close slightly over the final mile but Horne could relax in the home stretch and enjoy the final sprint as he realized his goal of winning the state title, crossing the line in 16:43.79.
Isaish Harris closed well over the final mile, and then used his speed to finish as the state runner-up, 17:01.27. Right behind him was Caleb Lord who clocked 17:01.93 for 3rd. Mohamed Awil gave the Blue Devils another low stick with his 4th place finish, 17:03.78. Stanhope would hold on for 5th place, 17:08.44.
The next group saw Jesse Southard hold off the hard charging Colin Tardiff (Scarborough) 17:13.81 to 17:14.28, right behind them was Logan Moses in 8th then Ryan Cadorette in 9th. Deering's Yayha Hussein rounded out the top 10 with a 17:19.49 effort.
The Lewiston Blue Devils left no doubt as to who was the best team in Class A as they tallied 51 points, good for a 43 victory over Scarborough.
Lewiston was paced by the 2-4 finish of Isaiah Harris & Mohamed Awil, also got a 14th place finish from Osman Mohamed, 17th place from Mohamed Mohamed & 19th place from Farhan Abdillahi.
Scarborough was lead by a 7th place finish of Colin Tardiff & a 12th place finish of Jacob Terry. They will be one of the favorites for 2014 with 3 underclassmen finishing in the top 16.
Bangor finished a solid 3rd with (113), while a depleted Falmouth team finished an impressive 4th (160) with Gorham (165) rounding out the top 5.
