Waterville girls the cream of the crop from 2009-2014
For each event we scored it based on 5 runners/jumpers/throwers, just like a cross-country race would be scored. After the 16 individual events were scored we went back an assigned points to each team who was in the top 10, the top team scored a 10, while the 10th place team scored 1. Below you will see a spreadsheet score for each event, and see the teams ranked from highest score to lowest. As a side note state meet results from 2005-2008 were also included in these rankings.
Outdoor Analysis
With all six Class B titles from 2009-2014 it is no surprise that the Waterville Purple Panthers are the top program during that 6 year time frame. The Panthers have been the gold standard not only in Class B but the entire state, and the stats back up that standard. Waterville tallied 103.16 by scoring in 15 of the 16 events. They were the top program in both hurdles (100HH & 300IH) plus the triple jump, additional the Panthers were the second best team in the shot put & discus as well as the 200m.
Class A Edward Little ranks as the #2 program the last six years, the Red Eddies scored 91.5 points while scoring in 12 of the 16 events. During this timeframe EL won a state title in 2009. EL ranked as the #1 program in the 100m, long jump & javelin while being the #2 ranked team in the racewalk & the triple jump.
Bangor holds down the third spot as the Rams program scored 74.5 points. They had the top spot in the pole vault plus tying for first in the high jump, they also were the second ranked team in long jump & 300IH.
Class B Greely who finished runner-up to Waterville several times is the fourth best program, the Rangers tallied 55 points. Greely had top ranked teams in the shot put & discus.
Rounding out the top 5 is Scarborough, the Red Storm had a total of 52.5. During this timeframe they won 2 Class A state titles. They scored in 9 events, with a second place ranking in the pole vault their highest scoring event.
Bonny Eagle was the 6th best program, The Scots scored in just 7 events but had high quality. BE was the top ranked program in the 200m, 400m & 800m.
York (50.5), Thornton Academy (45) & Cheverus (39) where the 7th-9th ranked programs.
In 10th place was Class C Orono with 27.66 points. The Riots have won the last 3 Class C state titles.
Breaking things down by event group reveals even more about the top programs. Bonny Eagle is the top distance program, they tallied 27 total points. In the horizontal jumps (LJ/TJ) Edward Little was the best team with 19 edging out Waterville by 1 point. In the vertical jumps, Bangor was the top program with 19 points. Edward Little led the way in throws with 23 points, while Waterville dominated the hurdles with 20 points.
Indoor Analysis
The battle for supremacy for the top indoor girls program from 2000-2104 was a close one between Waterville & Scarborough. The Purple Panthers ended up on top as they tallied 79 to the Red Storm's 75.5. No surprise these team are at the top as during the 6 year timeframe, Waterville won 5 Class B titles, while Scarborough won 4.
Waterville scored in 11 of the 12 individual events. They were the top ranked 55 hurdles team, while amassing second place finishes in the 400m, mile, shot put & triple jump. In fact they were ranked amongst the top 3 programs in 7 different events.
Scarborough also scored in 11 of the 12 events. The Red Storm were the top program in the 400m, 800m & pole vault, while obtaining a second place ranking in the long jump.
Thornton Academy a team with plenty of strong indoors teams the last 6 years is the third best program over that time. The Trojans were worth 66 points, with top rankings in the long jump, high jump & 200m.
Greely was the fourth best team matching their outdoor ranking. The Rangers tallied 59 points behind a top ranking in the shot put along with a pair of third place rankings in the 55 hurdles & triple jump.
Bonny Eagle rounds out the top five indoor programs with 55 points. The Scots scored in 7 events with a top ranking in both the Mile & 55m.
The Dragons of Brunswick come in as the sixth best team as they scored 44 points. Brunswick was the second best 800m team and had a top thre finish in the 200m & 400m.
Bangor was the 7th best program with 40 points, while Gorham (36) ranked 8th, with Edward Little (27) in 9th & Cheverus (26th) was the 10th best program.
Looking deeper into the event groups shows Bonny Eagle the top distance program just like outdoors, the Scots had 27 of the 30 points. In the sprints (55m|55h|200m|400m) Thornton Academy was the top program with 29 points, with Scarborough (27) & Waterville (24) the next best. In the vertical jumps (HJ/PV) Scarborough was the top ranked program with 18.5, while Waterville was tops in the horizontal jumps (LJ/TJ) with 17 points.
