Tell us how your summer training is going?
So far I've had a great time training this summer. I feel strong and am looking forward to starting the season. I've been away for the summer and I'm excited to get back to running with my friends in the 207, both from Falmouth and elsewhere.
What are your goals for the upcoming season?
My goal is always to push myself to the limits of my strength during races, however strong or weak I may be on a given day; if I accomplish that I'm satisfied, though setting a personal best on a course does feel awesome. I'd be psyched if Falmouth won the state championship and will work towards that goal, but the more fundamental goal of making myself stronger, and helping others get stronger, is what gets me through seasons. In addition to all that poetry I'm working towards a concrete goal: running a 60-mile week some time this season.
How long have you been running and how did you get started?
I started running in sixth grade–six years ago. I did cross country for a week and then quit, having walked one race. I ran a little on my own in seventh grade, then realized the challenge of running cross-country was staring me in the face, so started running for Falmouth again in eighth grade. I've been running since, and though it's been tough mentally at times, I love it. I returned to running in eighth grade because I saw it as an opportunity to test and grow my strength, and to be brave in a sense. I was scared before races– I usually still am, though I've become acclimated to racing. It's hard! The reward is being able to say that you dared to give it a shot and tried your best, even if the odds weren't with you. In addition, the mental toughness and self-knowledge that comes from running is transferable pretty much anywhere else. If you can call up the strength to run Twin Brook, you can summon it up for a lot of other things.
Will you be competing anywhere out of state this season?
I don't currently know if I'll be competing out of state this season; it depends on where my team decides to go.
What is your favorite course to run in Maine?
I liked the Kittery course last year. It had some tar and I'll admit I got lost, but it was right on the ocean.
What is the toughest course to run in Maine?
Of all the courses I've run, I've found Twin Brook to be the most difficult to run fast times on.I don't like to deem any race unimportant, since they are all opportunities for me to try my hardest; however, I usually will reduce my training mileage the week of the Festival of Champions in order to be well-rested, since it's a good course for a fast time.
What meet during the regular season do you put extra emphasize on to compete well at?
My favorite race so far was last year's Festival of Champions. I had had a particularly rough experience on the Belfast course the previous year at states and the year before that at Festival, but came back last year and ran my fastest 5k yet.
What is your favorite cross country race so far in your high school career & favorite cross country memory?
My favorite memory of cross country so far is that of running with my friends and teammates during preseason. August is one of my favorite months for weather.
When you are not running what is your favorite thing to do?
When I'm not running I love to daydream about, and work towards, exploring space. There's so much out there we don't know– I'd love to be Kirk and be able to rocket around the universe with a warp drive to see it all. For now I'm fine with running there.
Favorite quote?
Favorite quote: "Let us not jog like boys, but run like men!" –Sean Soucy (paraphrased)
What shoes do you train in?
I love my Asics GT-3000s. They're supportive, durable, and heavy, so they last the season, keep me injury-free and make spikes feel weightless.
What shoes do you race in?
I race in Nike Victory XCs. They do the job well.
What professional athlete would you most like to meet?
I'd like to meet Alberto Salazar.
What is something that most people don't know about you?
There's a theorem in celestial mechanics that shares my last name. According to Wikipedia, Lambert's theorem states:"The transfer time of a body moving between two points on a conic trajectory is a function only of the sum of the distances of the two points from the origin of the force, the linear distance between the points, and the semimajor axis of the conic." I thought that was pretty cool when I found out.
