The Cape Elizabeth girls are the top returning team in Western Maine Class B, The Capers who were the runners-up a year ago have a strong nucleus back, based on fastest returning 5k's they have 48 points, average 5k stats show them with a slight 2 point lead over Yarmouth. Cape returns 6 of their top 7 from last seasons lineup, plus added a talented track runner from MA in Liv Palmer who ran 5:17 for 1600m on the track last spring as a freshman.
The Clippers of Yarmouth were 4th a season ago, and have a strong upperclassmen presence this fall. That leadership should help them in the big meets, along with the talented runners they have. They will have to make up for the loss of Ellie Teare who will be headed to prep school this fall.
Greely is the next best returning team, The Rangers graduated 3 of their top 4 from last year's third place squad, but they have proven year after year that this is a strong program who just reloads and doesn't have to rebuild.
The Black Bears of Maranacook are right there as well, They have their entire top 7 back from last year's team, and will be looking to make the jump into the top team this fall.
Lisbon, Freeport & York look to be the other teams that have the inside track to qualfying for the state meet.
With Footlocker National qualifier Kirstin Sandreuter graduated the individual race in WM is wide open this fall. Based on last year's regional results Caitlin Teare of Yarmouth is the top returner, she is the top returning runner based on average as well, and has the 4th fastest returning time overall.
Cape's Rhoen Fiutak was 5th in the regional in 2013, she has the fastest returning 5k time (20:02.50), and showed great fitness in winning the Cape v South Portland scrimmage last Friday.
Fryeburg's Anna Lastra is another top returner to watch, she was 7th place last fall, she's the 5th fastest returner, and the 6th best in the average 5k data.
York's Malia Cryan was 8th last season as a freshman, she has the 4th best 5k average from last season. Maranacook's Hannah Despres placed 10th last fall, she ranks second in both data sets
