Going the Distance a blog by Kialeigh Marston

Follow the top overall distance runner in the State of Maine, Bonny Eagle junior Kialeigh Marston as she embarks on her second season of cross-country. Marston was the Class A State Champion last fall in her first xc season, she returns as the heavy favorite to repeat.

This summer went by so quickly. Outdoor seems like only last week, as Hannah said. It’s hard to believe that New England’s was ten weeks ago! It’s even harder to believe I worked my nine weeks already.

I spent my summer working at Slovenski Camps in Raymond. For the first five weeks, there were no running camps, so I was a dodge ball counselor (which was great cross training!) and as a XC counselor for the last four. Camp was a great opportunity for me to get my base mileage in, which is what I like to focus on during my summer training.

It was great meeting other runners and having the opportunity to work with them as coworkers and as campers, especially meeting other local runners that I compete against and being able to train with them. I learned so much working at Slovenski Camp, and since it’s only my second year running XC, being able to work with much more experienced runners was very beneficial to my training.

One week, Don Cabral, was a coach at camp. It was pretty awesome, working with someone who placed at the Olympics, pretty rad! My coworkers, many of them are also XC runners, made it quite easy to get my mileage done, even if it included some night runs. I leave camp this year with many great memories. (Thanks guys!)

Preseason is well underway and I was able to practice with my team for the first time today. We have the Wilkerson Invitational on Thursday, which means we are working hard on getting the trails in order, not a small fete! Our numbers have dropped a lot, since we graduated a majority of our Varsity team. This season, I’m looking forward to seeing how our team improves from its current standings. I hope everyone has great races Wednesday at Cony - big shout out to Brooke, Olivia and Tessa – I hope you guys do great!
