George Stevens Academy is the top returning team in 2014. A year ago GSA finished as the Eastern Maine runner-up, and look poised to make the move to top in 2014. GSA leads in both the fastest 5k & average 5k returning times. Four of the top nine fastest 5k returners give GSA quality and depth at the front of the pack.
Fort Kent is the nest best returning squad in 2014 based on the 2013 results. If you just take into consideration the fastest 5k for each team FK is within 14 points but the margin expands to 42 with the average 5k times considered.
The next best teams look to be Washburn, and defending EM Champion Orono. While these are the top returning teams a lot can happen in Class C as several schools didnt return 5 runners from last year's squad but may have some talented freshman coming in or pick up someone who didnt run a year ago.
Individually defending champion Matt Toussaint of Fort Kent is back looking to make it two EM titles in a row. Toussaint best 5k time from 2013 is 33 seconds faster than 2nd ranked John Hassett of GSA. He also has the best returning 5k average.
A year ago as a freshman John Hassett was the EM runner-up, with a year of experience under his belt watch for Hassett to be even better in 2014.
Orono's Tristan Butterfield placed 4th last fall in the regional, and returns with the 3rd best times in each of the data sets.
Others to watch will be Devlin Valle of GSA, Derek Baker of Washburn & Sam Ouellette of Fort Kent who were 8th, 9th & 10th a year ago.
As part of our XC preview this year we are doing a virtual meets of the returners from last year based on 5k times for each class. This is based off each returning runners fastest 5k of the 2013 season.
