The Thornton Academy girls made it two Class A state titles in a row as they scored 53 while Lewiston had a program best finish with 49 points to take home the runner-up trophy

The Golden Trojans got 30 points from senior standout Tori Daigle who won the long jump, triple jump & 55m hurdles. Down to her last attempt in the long jump without a fair jump, the defending state champion and meet record showed resolve as she hit the board perfect and the results was a new state meet record of 18-2 and a huge sigh of relief for the Thornton Academy.

Daigle ran a seasonal best 8.61 to defend her title in the 55m hurdles as the top 4 all ran under 8.90. She completed her perfect day in the triple jump where she got a huge mark of 37-9 1/2, which was a new state leader and the third best mark ever by Maine high school girl.

Thornton got a huge boost when sophomore Samantha Curran the #2 seed in the shot put through a personal best 38-0 3/4 to win the event.

Senior Ali Pettaway provided important points towards the title as well. Pettaway placed third in the 55m dash final, finished 4th in the long jump, and got 2 more points with a 6th place finish in the triple.

For the runner-up Blue devils of Lewiston they got a great day out of sprint star Heather Kendall. Kendall had a personal best 7.36 to leave the field in her dust to win the 55m dash, the time is the second fastest in the state only behind Kate Hall of Lake Region. She was just as good in the 200m, as Kendall exploded out of the blocks and continued to power away from the field, her winning effort was 26.37, another personal best and state #2 performance. Her day wasn't down as she led of the 4x200m relay for Lewiston, and immediately seized the lead, one that they wouldn't relinquish as they would cross the line first in 1:50.76

Messalonkee's Taylor Lenentine won the pole vault title as she was the only one the clear 10-0. While Massabesic sophomore Moriah Biener was the surprise winner in the high jump as she cleared 5-2 on her first attempt.

Bonny Eagle had a couple of individual winners as sophomore Elisabeth Redwood dominated the 400m as she just miss breaking the 60 second barrier with her winning effort of 60.24. Also for the Scots, junior Kialeigh Marston defended her mile title as she pulled away with a last lap kick to take it in 5:20.35

Cheverus won the opening track event the 4x800 with a state leading time of 10:07.65. While Brunswick's Tiffany Tanner won the 800m with a great last lap, Tanner's winning time was 2:23.86


The boys meet came down to the final event as four time defending champion Scarborough held a three point lead over Falmouth. The Yacthsmen where the top seed in the relay and they didn't disappoint as they ran a school record, and the second fastest 4x200m relay in state history. The best part about the win it propelled them to their first Class A State indoor title, in just there second year in Class A.

Right from the start, Falmouth got an unexpected contribution from senior shot putter Matt Edmonds who threw 48-1, Edmonds entered the competition with a best of 44-6. Edmonds throw vaulted him from the 9th seed all the way to 4th. The Yachstmen continued their success winning the opening 4x800m relay in a state leading 8:17.36.

The distance squad for Falmouth contributed some important points to the title as well. Bryce Murdick finished 3rd in the 2 mile as he kicked by Aaron Willingham for 2 more important points that had coach Jorma Kurry excited, earlier in the meet Murdick placed 5th in the mile. Junior Josh Simensky placed 4th in the 800m in a photo finish with Colin Jones of Scarborough as they were both timed in 2:04.97. While senior Spencer Brown provided 6th place finish in both the mile & 800m.

While the sprint squad did their part in the 200m as Falmouth who had only 1 seeded in the top 10, placed 4th-6th for 9 important points. Junior Nick Sanzari 23.63 finished 4th, followed by seniors Kohl Valle 23.75 in 5th & Andy Clement 23.83 in 6th.

For runner-up Scarborough they got wins from seniors Hugh McSorley in the shot put as he threw a lifetime best 51-4 1/4, while Jacob Terry repeated as 2 mile champion with his 9:49.76 performance. They also were the runner-ups in the 4x800, and the 55m hurdles, plus got a third place contribution from senior Edward James in the pole vault.

Deering's Hany Ramadan was the star of the meet. The senior broke the state meet record of 49.93 with his winning effort of 49.78 as he held off a strong challenge from Cheverus's Jake Dixon, the time for Ramadan was the second fastest in state history. Hany wasn't done as he matched up with Dixon once again in the 200m, this time he came from behind again clocking a winning effort of 22.70, which was a new state leading time and just of the state meet record 22.65. Dixon was a strong second in 22.82. Ramdan's time was the 4th fastest in the last 10 years while Dixon's ranks 6th.

Biddeford's Justin Gagnon won a close and exciting hurdle final as he and Griffin Madden of Scarborough both ended up on the ground at the finish. Gagnon would take the win in a state leading 7.78, while Madden was the runner-up in a fast 7.83. Gagnon would also finish as the state runner-up in the triple jump with a 43-4 1/2 effort.

In the 800m, Chris Tanner of Brunswick matched his sister win as he took over after the first 400m to power his way to the win in 2:01.04, his teammate Keenan Welzel 2:01.58 was the runner-up.

Lewiston's Hassan Mohamed was the fastest in the 55m, as the senior crossed the line first in 6.70 edging Thornton Academy's Derek Boissonault 6.73. Another highlight for Lewiston was the surprise win by senior Sabin Lavorgna who cleared 6-0 to win on misses, he entered the competition with a best of 5-10 on the season.

South Portland's Michael Cuesta had no match in the jumps. Cuesta opened his day with a 21-2 1/4 effort to win the long jump over Dylan Smith of TA who jumped 20-8. In the triple jump Cuesta added his second consecutive title as he saved his best jump for last when he got out to a state leading 45-0 1/4

Hampden Academy's Paul Casavant won the mile in a state leading 4:24.26 as no one in the field could match his turnover in the last 800m of the race. Casavant would also finish as the runner-up in the 2 mile clocking 9:52.21

Sanford's Peter Hegraty took the won in the pole vault as he cleared 13-0 on his final attempt, then was the only one in the field to leap over 13-6.
