Throwing Deep

Check out "Throwing Deep" a blog by South Portland thrower Daniel Guiliani. Guiliani was the Class A shot put champion outdoors and finished second in the New England Championship a year. He broke the Maine all-time best indoors with a 62-4 effort.

Hey Everyone,

What a season it has been so far. Big numbers are being posted left and right, as well as State all-time bests. My team has done very well so far. Many are improving week by week and really giving all their effort in practice. We only lost once in a regular season meet and place second at westbrook relays. We really have what it takes to be a competitive team come championship meets.

Personally, I'm right where I want to be. I feel very accomplished about my 65'6'' and how hard it was to get to where I am, but it feels like the work is paying off. The meet after I had a throw of 65'4'', so I'm glad that I'm consistent. I'm working toward bigger numbers and testing my limit in distance this season, as I have my mind set on 68+. I've been working on form and staying lower with my drive across the ring, and I have to say, its starting to click.

Discus is coming along. I had a new personal best of 165'8'', and I'm very pleased with where I'm at. I'm shooting for 170's now. Its a very reasonable goal and I've thrown farther than 170 in practice. I'm working on being relaxed in the ring and now getting to mechanical. I had a meet at home where I threw 151' because I was forcing it and trying hard to get the disc out there, but that never works too well for me at the end of it all. I try to treat meets like practice because it calms me down and changes my mindset about the whole thing.

Maybe not as impresive, but I'm qualifyied for the state meet in the javelin! I am starting to work on it more in practice and the PR at the last home meet was 136-6. for that I really just want to keep improving and throw in the 145 range and possibly score at states. It'll take some hard work, but It's not far fetched to change something in your form and throw 10 feet over your PR if you have a break through moment.

I'm very excited for the next meet and the hope I can best myself in all three throws.

Good luck to all those who are competing this week!
