Throwing Deep

Check out "Throwing Deep" a blog by South Portland thrower Daniel Guiliani. Guiliani was the Class A shot put champion outdoors and finished second in the New England Championship a year. He broke the Maine all-time best indoors with a 62-4 effort.

Hey everybody,

I am so pleased with the way this season going. Our team I thought did very well and stepped up at the state meet. Many individuals on our team exceeded expectations by beating their seeds, and placing in events they weren’t suppose to score in! I’m going to sincerely miss competing with my team by my side.

Individually I can’t complain one bit about my accomplishments. I defended my state title in shot put and set a state meet record in the process. Saturday will mark my last competition of the season and I really want to go big.

Last year I was the runner-up at the New-England championship and this year I am going for the title. I am seeded well in both shot put and discus and want to make my coaches proud and perform at the highest level possible. 66-5 still stands as my top mark of the year, and though just winning would be just fine by me, I want to break that all time mark just one last time.

I just need to stay relaxed more than anything. I always think of indoors and my foul out at the state meet and just remembering the feeling I had afterwords, and promising myself nothing like that will happen again, and when it's time to go big, I will need to have a different approach from what I had at that state meet. My approach indoors was to right off the bat go all out and not focus on getting one to count first, and that hurt me in the end. As I was in that meet, I’m seeded first, but I have found my poise and ability to look at these meets like every other, and to just simply get one to count and throw bigger and bigger through out the competition.

I am very excited to see some great jumps, throws, sprints, and distance competiton saturday and I wish the best of luck to all who is competing!
