Cape Elizabeth, Lake Region, Waynflete, Old Orchard Beach@ Greely
The Rangers go home this week as they go up against a tough Cape Elizabeth and Waynflete. Greely's #1 runner, Katherine Lagget-Barr was out last week, so they relied on their freshman Carolyn Todd. She got her first win at NYA as she ran a 20:36 for the 5k course. Todd won by 7 seconds over the second place runner. If Barr isn't back in the line up, look for Todd to lead the field again. From Cape, keep an eye on Liv Palma. Palma was second last week at Freeport as she pushed the defending WMC champ, Mira Wyman, almost the whole race. Palma ran a 20:45, don't be surprised if she is up with Todd. Looking to push the pace is Lake Region's senior, Audrey Blais. In a matter of two weeks, Blais dropped her time by over a minute running on her home course. Her season opened up with the Lake Region Invite where she placed 7th with a 20:45 over 2.8 miles. Last week, Blais won with a stunning 19:28. Waynflete's pack of 4 runners will be challenging the field as well. Leading that pack last week was Gail Johnson. Johnson ran against Blais and finished 7 seconds behind her. Johnson's teammates Anna Libby, Ellie Chidsey, and Abby Pipkin will all be pushing each other right to the finish. They had a split of only 10 seconds.
If the hills of Twin Brook don't deflate anyone, It can be a three way team battle, If Barr doesn't race again. If Barr does, then Greely will get yet another win. Last week Greely won by a mere point over MCW (Maine Coastal Waldorf) with a 4:28 split and 23:30 average. But it might be a battle for second between Cape and Waynflete. Waynflete proved in their opening meet, that they're a contender in the conference with their top 4 running all together and then finishing with 1-5 split of 1:06 and averaging 20:01. Cape was second to Falmouth last week by 3 points. Their split was a 2:08 with a 21:42 average.
Greely boys snagged an easy first win last week at NYA but will be pushed a little bit more by the young Cape Elizabeth team. Greely is lead by Ryan Morrison who's been putting up some strong numbers this season. Morrison got his first win over MCW's Tucker Pierce. Morrison, almost going sub 17, with his 17:00.30 clocking. He'll be the front runner of this race, and will be FAR out front. Along with Morrison will be his teammate Kyle Hansen. Hansen was 17:25 at NYA and will separate himself as well from the chase pack. From Cape, Jared Duperre will try run another PR as he went 17:55 at Freeport finishing 9th.
The Greely boys averaged an 18:03 last week with a 1:50 split. With the home field advantage it's gonna be a sure win for them. The Cape boys will try to make a statement with a definite second place. Though they're young, they're starting to come together, don't count them out when October comes around. Cape averaged an 18:56 with a 1:50 split at Freeport.
MCW, Poland, York @ Freeport
Lily Johnston and Hannah Schnyder will go head to head again on their home course and strive to go 1 and 2, but MCW's duo Fiona Ahearne and Olivia Skillings isn't going to make it easy as these four will be the front runners of this race along with York's Sophomore, Kathryn Miller. Ahearne and Skillings went second and third at NYA with times of 20:43 and 20:46. Last year on this course, Skillings won with a 20:32. Johnston was third last week as she lead the chase group with a 21:06. Her teammate, Schnyder, was fourth and only 3 seconds behind her teammate. York's #1 runner, Kathryn Miller, ran to a fifth place with a 21:47 on a difficult GNG course. Miller raced the same group of runners last year and was second to Skillings with a 21:05. Watch for these five as they will make it a close one.
When the teams go up, its anyones race. York was second to Yarmouth last week as they averaged a 22:55 on the difficult Libby Hill with a 1:37 split. MCW was third at NYA, they averaged a 23:17 with a wide 4:40 split. Freeport also finished third with a 22:05 average and a 2:16 split. If you want to watch an exciting team race, this is the one to watch.
Freeport boys look to run even faster this second time around on their home course. Chandler Vincent crushed the field last week with a 20 second win over his teammate Henry Jaques. But they're also looking to recover, and bounce back after an upset to Falmouth. Vincent won the 5k with a 16:37. He'll try to repeat that as MCW's Junior, Tucker Pierce, will push him. Pierce ran a 17:07 at NYA as he placed second, He'll look to speed things up this week on a faster Freeport course. Jaques will try to cut his time down on his teammate, Vincent, and run to another second place as he fights with Pierce. Jaques was 16:57 on his home course last week, hopefully he'll drop his time more this week. After their opening loss to Wells, York re-established themselves and won last week GNG with Sam Sewall leading the team up and down Libby Hill with a 17:58. Not too far back was York's next 3 runners with Rees Schaeffer, Rex Brockelman, and Evan Hultstrom as they had a split of only 6 seconds going 18:14, 18:15, and 18:20. They'll be leading the chase group with Freeport's Eric Brobst in the mix. He went 17:14 on his home course.
Freeport can be challenged again this week if they don't get their act together. Falmouth tested Freeport real well as they beat them by 5 points. Freeport had a broad split of 2:52 and an average of 17:44. York on the other hand had an easy day at Libby Hill as they won 34-52 over Yarmouth. Their split was 1:10 and averaged an 18:23. Though their average is slower than Freeport's, York had to literally run all up hill for a mile, and go through rolling hills at the top, but fly down the final mile. Watch these teams go at it as York tests Freeport's skills.
Falmouth, Sacopee Valley, Kennebunk @ Yarmouth 21:36
The Falmouth ladies are going to try to improve to 3-0 as they go up against an undefeated Yarmouth Clippers. Falmouth beat the defending State Champs of Class B, but can they get the runner ups? You'd think so. Yarmouth's #1 runner (with the fastest 5k time in the state), Abigail Hamilton will have the advantage this week as she races her home course. Last week at Libby Hill she took a wrong turn and almost got lost, but that didn't stop her from grabbing the win in a 20:23 fashion. Lucky for her, she'll know where to go this week. Trying to challenge her and push the pace is Falmouth's senior, Mira Wyman, and freshman, Malaika Pasch. Pasch didn't run last week, but Wyman took the win in a 20:41 at Freeport, Its going to be a tough run for Wyman, but look for her at the beginning. Hamilton's teammate, Grace Cowles will try to run with Wyman and Pasch. She was fourth at GNG as she trotted to a 21:26.
The Falmouth Yachtsmen boys will try to Improve to 3-0, but so are the Clippers. Yarmouth has the fast front runners, but the back of the pack slacks, yo! They averaged a 22:21 for 5k last week with a 3:42 split. Falmouth had a better week, but ran on an easier course as they went 21:42 as a team and a 1:26 average. Thats where they beat Yarmouth, with the 1-5 split. But Yarmouth opened the season up with a 20:50 average, but still a broad split of 2:38. Falmouth's average and split on their hilly home course was 21:36 with their 1-5 at a 1:13. It's going to be exciting who gets the W this week.
In the boys race, no doubt the front runner and winner is going to be Luke Laverdiere. Laverdiere took his schoolings last year, learned from them, and is now on a mission to be the best in the state. He's already taken the right foot steps into doing it. He's won both WMC races, plus the Laliberte Invite over Christopher Wallfield. Laverdiere crushed the field at GNG as he went 16:39. Maybe this week he'll set a new PR, faster than 16:18. Chasing him down will be the pack of blue. Jeremiah Sands, Sean Soucy, and Josh Siminskey as they'll lead Falmouth to yet another victory. Jeremiah Sands is experiencing XC for the first time this year after a couple years of track and all he's done is propel foreword and to the top. He was third at Freeport with a 17:13. Watch him lead the chase pack. Also watch the duo Siminskey and Soucy. Soucy was 17:29 last week while his other half was 4 seconds back with a 17:33.
No question here, Falmouth is going to run away with the win. After pulling the upset against #1 Freeport, there is no question right now that they have no opponents in the WMC again and they're right where they left off from last year. Falmouth went 29-34 over Freeport with a 40 second split and 17:36 average.
Gray, NYA, Traip, Wells@ Fryeburg
The Girls from Fryeburg will look to get another win under their belt after putting in a tough effort last week only to fall short to Yarmouth and York. Leading the Fryeburg Raiders is Anna Lastra, Lastra went 20:44 at GNG as she ran to a second place. Her teammate Emily Carty was 26 seconds back of her with a 21:20 as she finished third. Watch for these two to put on a show on their new home course.
The Raiders finished third at Libby Hill, and look to bounce back with a win. They averaged a 23:06 over the hard 5k with a 4:21 split. They look to get another win like they did at the Lake Region Invite.
Gray and Fryeburg's #1 runners face off against each for the third time this season. Ben Garcia of Gray and Patrick Carty of Fryeburg square off on Carty's home course. Garcia got the best of Carty at the Lake Region invite where he went 14:58 as Carty was only 15:04. Last week Carty got the best of him on his home course going 17:16 to place second where Garcia was 17:44. Garcia will try to upset Carty on his home course, like Carty did to him. Looking to chase the two down will be Well's junior, Wesley Moody. Moody was 15:43 at Lake Region as he ran away for the win over his teammate Mitch Libby, who was just under 16 with a 15:59.
Wells is 2-0 this season and looks like they'll be 3-0 by the end of the week. The Warriors pulled an upset win over York in their opening week, and last week they won 21-42 over Waynflete with a 16:34 average over the 2.8 mile course with a 2:37 average.
