Last week Malaika Pasch of Falmouth took off from the gun, and in the end was almost caught, her margin of victory was just .13 at the Southern Maine Regional Championship
On Saturday she had a plan, "Going into the race I knew Katherine & Louise were going to there, so I was going to try to stay more with the pack."
Pasch & Leckbee of Mt Ararat set the fast early pace as they sprinted out front, at the mile they were together in 5:42.
Louise Holway of Kennebunk was about 20-30m behind the duo as she headed up the superhighway.
"I stayed with Katherine for 1 1/2 miles then made a move when we entered the woods." the sophomore said.
The move didn't gain Pasch but a few meters but she was at the front controlling the race again. Holway was 9 seconds back but looking strong.
The two mile was hit in 11:57 for Pasch with Leckbee a stride behind at 11:58. Holway was still 7 seconds down but starting to pick the pace up.
Pasch knew Holway was right there with 800m to go "I could hear the crowd cheering, so I tried to do some surges."
Coming up the final hill it looked like Pasch had the race in hand, but Holway never gave an inch as she was fought all the way to the line, almost making up a 10m gap.
In the end Pasch's winning was 18:22.02, while Holway was an agonizing .48 seconds back at 18:22.50. The last two weeks she has finished second, and by a combined .61 after 6.2 miles of running.
"I thought I left everything I had out there, it's all you can ask for" the senior from Kennebunk said.
Behind them Leckbee sealed up third place with a new personal of 18:42.41.
She was followed in fourth place by Natalie DuBois of Marshwood in 19:22.65. DuBois's performance was a bit of a surprise as she finished 9th at the Southern Maine Regional a week ago, but the fast course suited her strengthens, and she set a personal best by 14 seconds.
Cony's Anne Guadalupi rounded out the top 5, she clocked 19:23.12. Guadalupi finished in the top 10 all four years of her career, an impressive feat.
In the team race it was Bonny Eagle repeating as state champions. Leading the way was sophomore Ami Beaumier who finished 9th, she was followed by Christine Toy in 11th. Kayla Raymond provided a 15th place while Abbie Nelson finished 27th. Rounding out the scorers for the champs was Emma Abbott in 37th.
The Scots tallied 77 to edge Southern Maine Regional Champion Falmouth by 6 points. Massabesic finished third with 143, while Northern Maine Champion Brunswick was 4 points back in fourth place.
