Western Maine Champions Crowned

Girls

There was plenty of excitement to go around at Saturday's Western Maine girls regional cross country championships at Twin Brook Recreation Park in Cumberland
Not only that, but plenty of fast times
Class C started the day off, Waynflete the defending champions repeated with an easy victory 44-77 victory over Lisbon. The battle for the last two spots was very close Monmouth Academy was 3rd (96) & St. Dom's (96) tied with Monmouth having the advantage with the better 6th runner. Traip Academy just missed the last spot, a heartbreaking 3 points away from states, although they did qualify 4 girls.

The Class A race had the most teams competing, so a total of 8 teams got to continue their seasons. The #2 ranked Scarborough Red Storm used a strong pack of 4 girls to run away win the title with (91), in a close race for 2nd, Massabesic & TA were separated by just 2 points. Massabesic surprised a lot people, (although Milesplit did have them 3rd in pre-race predictions) finished 2nd with (123) with TA in 3rd (125). Bonny Eagle was 4th (143) with Gorham (146) just 2 points back rounding out the top 5. Kennebunk, McAuley, & Cheverus were the other teams making states

Class B had perhaps the most talented teams, and to some coaches dismay it was discovered at the starting line that only 5 teams would make it to states, this meant some good teams would be left at home. Cape Elizabeth showed its talent and depth by scoring just (26) points to defeat surprise runner-up Greely (94) by 68. (Milepslit was right again on this one). Freeport was just 6 back in 3rd with (100). Falmouth (120) & York (126) rounded out the top 5 that move on to next week's state championship.

In Class C, Adele Espy sprinted off the starting line and never had to look back as she cruised to an victory over the rest of the field. Espy came through the mile in 5:57, 39 seconds ahead of Valley's Jocelyn Lawyerson. Kerstin Grenier (Mon. Acad) was next in 6:48 with Anna Doyle (Winthrop) 6:53 in 4th. Rounding out the top 5 was Devon Ayer (Mon. Acad) who crossed in 6:54. Not a lot changed up front at the 2 mile mark, Espy continued to tear up the trails, hitting mile in 6:17 for a 2 mile split of 12:14. Her lead had grown to 1:28 over Lawyerson, who was comfortably in second place 29 seconds up on 3rd place runner Grenier. Doyle was closing the gap was 11 seconds back crossing in 14:22, with Ayer just 4 ticks back in 14:26. The team battle looked to be going Waynflete's way as they two others in the top as the runners passed 2 miles. The final mile saw Espy's lead grow to 2:21, as she powered home covering the last 1.1 miles in 6:55, crossing the line in 19:09 for her 2nd straight Western Class C Regional title. Lawyerson was 2nd in 21:30, with Doyle kicking past Grenier in the last 100 for 3rd. Waynflete's #2 girl Zoe Sobel moved up 2 spots over the last mile for 5th in 22:16. Kayla Moan led Lisbon with her 6th place finish, with Emily Trafton (Waynflete) finishing in 7th.

In Class A we saw the fastest time of the day posted by freshman phenom Abbey Leonradi(Kennebunk), as she cruised to an impressive 18:18 cloking on a challenging course that isn't know to produce fast times. Leonardi and another top freshman Emily Durgin (Bonny Eagle) took the race out fast as Abbey came through in 5:37 with Durgin just took clicks back in 5:39. It's not often that you see a girl's race go out this fast at Twin Brook. The hot pace dragged several other harriers along, teammates Olivia Mackenzie & Lauren fecteau (McAuley) along with Fiona Hendry (Cheverus) were even at the mile 5:52, with Hannah Pierce(Massabesic) in 6th, through in 5:57. Racel Wilkinson (Gorham) was next in 6:01 with Amelia Lundkvist (Cheverus) & Vickie Hewey (Sanford) in 8th & 9th coming through in 6:10.

After the mile Leonardi continued to hit the acclerator as her led started to grow, by the 2 mile mark it was up to 12 seconds, as she tore across in 11:46 (5:37-6:09), with Durgin next in 11:58. Hendry & Mackeznie were running fine races and hanging tough, they both were 12:10 at the 2 mile. Pierce was up to 5th (12:22) with Wilkinson starting to close the gap in 6th (12:31) Fecteau was back to 7th (12:37) with Hewey moving up to 8th (12:44) with Lundkvist a step behind. Grace Glynn (TA) had moved into the top 10 at 2 miles just ahead of Scarborough's #1 runner Melissa Dellatore.

The final mile saw Leonardi never let up as she sprinted down to the finish line, crossing with a 18:18, easily the top time of the day and a 40 second victory over runner-up Durgin (18:58). Asked after the race about her fast opening mile, Leonardi said "I expected the pace to be slower but it didn't feel hard so I just went with it". Looking forward to next week Leonardi says " I want to get a good time and win". Abbey also confirmed that she would be running in the Footlocker Northeast later on in Novermber. Hendry yet after freshman was 3rd in a fine 19:09 just 4 clicks in front of Mackenzie. Wilkinson moved up to 5th during the last mile (19:28) with Pierce next in 6th (19:34). Pierce's run was key to Massabesic's 2nd place finish overall. Hewey ended up 7th (19:53) and the 8th athletes under 20:00 was Fecteau (19:56). Lundkvist was 9th (20:08) & moving all the way up to 10th with a great last closing mile was Whitney Chamberlain (Scar). Chamberlain was Scarborough's first girl at 10 but the Red Storm pack 3 more in at 15-17th to secure the team win, Meghan Summerson was the 5th runner for the Red Storm (33rd 21:50). Chamberlain said after the race "I didn't believe but wanted to be top 10, I'm motivated to do better a states now, the key to my run was that I pushed up every hill and lenghtened my stride on the downhills". When asked about the her team's success and looking forward to next week, she responded "Our goal is to win".

In Class B it was another triumph for a freshman, as Abby Mace (Maranacook) ran away with the title clocking the second fastest time of the day with her 18:53, while the Cape Elizabeth Capers showed great talent and incredible depth in winning the team title with just 26 points, Cape had all seven runner in the top 18.

Cape Elizabeth had the rest of their top 5 in the top 12 at the mile. With only 5 teams making states, there was no indication outside of Cape how things were panning out at the mile.

Just after the exited the woods, Abby Mace took the lead and gapped Attwood and would never look back from that point on, as they hit 2 mile Mace was 12:03 (5:52-6:11), and her lead was up to 22 seconds. Kelsey Barton (Cape)made a move passing Goding into 3rd just before the 2 mile, as they were both around 12:49. Susla still looked good in 5th (12:47), with Swiatek 10 second abck in 6th. Tess Carley (Greely) was moving up through the pack (13:01), then came the rest of the Cape pack as led by Hannah Doss & Catherine Tierney. Taylor Burr rounded out the top 10.

Boys

The Western Maine Boys XC Championship, had a little of everything. Fast times, blow out victories, & a ties.

Class C started the day off, and Boothbay backd up their MVC win from last week, with 4 runners in the top 12, they were 34 points better than the runner-ups Winthrop & Monmotuh Academy. Winthrop & Monmouth tied for 2nd, but Winthrop got to take home the hardware because their 6th man was better than Monmouth's. Only 4 seconds seperated the 6th runners. Lisbon had one of it's better races of the year to finish 4th with (94) points. Hall-Dale rounded out the top with (138). Also advancing to state were Telstar & Traip Academy.

Class A was up next and the team race didn't disappoint as Cheverus & Scarborough hook up in a thriller. Each team battled eachother all the way to the finish line, Cheverus had 4 runners in the top 10, while Scarborough had 3. The Red Storm's 4th runner was 11th & 5th runner was 16th, Cheverus's 5th man was the all important 19. Through 5 runners each team had 40 points, it came down to each team's 6th runner, where Mark Beahm (25th) edged Joe Prosack (27th) by 6 seconds to give the Stags the Regional title. It doesn't get much better than tha, both teams showed great sportsmanship after the race, knowing that they pushed eachother to fine races. Not t be missed in the race, Massabesic was 3rd (102), with Thornton Academy (126) in 4th. A surprise Windham was 5th (172). Also qualifying were Bonny Eagle, Gorham & Marshwood.

Class B finished up the day and this race was over early as the Greely Rangers, running on their home course, showed top form with three runners in the top 5, and 5 runners in the top 11 finishers to score a low of 33 points. Cape Elizabeth was a strong second tallying (69) ahead of 3rd place Falmouth (83). Yarmouth had a strong run for 4th (110), while York rounded out the top 5 with (118). Fryeburg Academy & Maranacook also qualified for states.

In Class C it was the Wade Davis show as he cruised to an easy victory posted the 2nd fastest time of the day with his 16:23 PR. Davis led from wire-to-wire, hitting mile 1 in a blistering 5:01. When asked after the race about the pace, he responded " I didn't hear my split", maybe that was a good thing. His advantage was 27 seconds over the 2nd pack which had Matt McClintok (Madison), Alex Branson (Lisbon), Ethan Masselli (Lisbon) & Matt McCollett (Monmouth).

By 2 miles Davis continued his fast pace coming through in 10:24 (5:01-5:23) as his lead grew to 47 seconds over McClintok. Just 2 seconds back in 3rd was Branson with Masselli just a few steps behind. Boothbay looked to hae the team race comfortably in hand at the 2 mile, as they had 4 guys in the top 15 at that point.

Davis extended his lead out to 1:01 over McClintok, as he capture his first regional title, running 32 seconds faster than a year ago. McClintok just a freshman had a strong run and may be the future in Class C. Branson & Masselli finished well for 3rd & 4th, which propelled Lisbon to a 4th place team finish. McCollett was the #1 for Monmouth finished in 5th (17:46), which was 3rd overall as a team. Just 10 seconds seperated places 5-10, and Boothbay's Zach Capmbell had a great sprint finish to edge out Pat Romar (Winthop) for 6th, the difference a mere .03 seconds.

In Class A the race was intense throughout, with a group of four at the front of the pack for 2 miles, not only were they battling for the individual title, but they all had deciding interests in the team title. At the mile it was Nate Hathaway (Scar), Craig Robinson (Scar), Jack Terwilliger (Cheverus), 7 Andrew Synder (Cheverus) all coming through in 5:10 at the mile, just a few steps back were Tim Belanger (Bonny Eagle), Ben Morrison (Massabesic), Jonathan Clement (South Portland), Sam Chick (Scarborough), Tim Woods (Cheverus), Garret Clemmer (Windham), Taylor Dundas (Cheverus) Josh Reali (Cheverus) were all through in 5:15 or a bit faster. It was evident early that Cheverus had come to run and were being aggresive at the front.

The pack started to seperate a bit at around the 1.5 mile marker as a pack of four emerged with two Scarborough (Hathaway & Robinson) & two Cheverus (Terwillier & Synder) running stride for stride, they had opened up a 10 second gap over the chase pack, led by Morrison, that included Belanger, Clemmer, Dundas, Woods, & Chick.

By 2 mile the same four were together, with Hathaway at the front taking the pace. They passed through in 10:41 (5:10-5:31). The team race looked very tight with Cheverus having 4 guys in front of Scarborough's #3, but the Red Storm had #4 & #5 ahead of Cheverus's #5. The last mile being the toughest a lot could happen and it did over the last 1.1 miles. Hathaway seized control of the race just after the 2 mile, "I thought it was the right opportunity, I used the noise of the crowd to lenghten my lead" he commented after the race. As they headed up the final steep hill, the race was really starting to change, Robinson developed a cramp and fell back into 6th place. Clemmer of Windham had moved up, with Dundas, Woods & Chick battling eachother. Griffin from Scarborough was moving up the whole time as well and was 13th coming out of the woods.

As the hit the final downhill before they turned onto the homestretch Terwilliger passed Hathaway for the lead, Hathaway said "I let Jack pass me, I was confident in my speed, I dug dig and started my kick once we hit the homestretch". Hathaway would go on for the win in 16:46, Terwilliger was 2nd in 16:49, Andrew Synder, probably the biggest surprise for Cheverus was 3rd in 16:52. Chick unleaded a huge kick over the last 200, to move from 8th to 4th, which was huge in the team scoring. Clemmer had a strong finish as well to nab 5th (17:01). Dundas ran a gutsy race for 6th, while Morrison led Massbesic to a 3rd place team finish with his 7th place finish just sliding past Robinson at the line by .2. Belanger was 9th, while Woods of Cheverus rounded out the top 10. The battle for 11th was intense between Sean Griffin (Scar) & Jonathan Clement(SP) as it wasn't clear until the announced awards who finished where, even on the results they handed out were not correct, the difference between the two was again .2

In Class B it was an excellent race at the front, as Matt Rand (Cape) & Alex Moser (York), those two were running stride for stride at the miles, as they passed in 5:10. They had opened up a 8-10 second lead on the second pack as the experienced Greely pack of Mark McCauley, James Lepage & Logan Price held down the 3-5th spots. Behind them Kenedi Hall (Fryeburg), Chris Flathers (Cape), Dylan Lajoie (Poland), Andy Fitch (Geely), Dan Herbien (York) & then the three Falmouth runners Tim Follo, Scott Gardner, & Jame Esptein.

As the runners toured there way around the course, at the 1.5 mile mark, Rand had opened up a 3 second gap on Moser, he took a peak back as he rounded the corner, after the York fans were yelling for Moser, just to see how close the race was. Whatever it was Rand picked the pace up further, as his lead at 2 miles was up to 6 seconds, as he passed through in 10:25. Moser was running very well, (10:31) and safely in 2nd place. The Greely packed looked in control as they passed 2 mile in 10:43. Flathers had worked his way up in 6th, at 10:51, with Hall a step back in 10:52. Follo was leading the Falmouth charge in 8th 11:00, with Fitch just off him in 11:01. Next through was Gardner 11:04 with Lajoie stride for stride with him.

Rand finished rolling the last 1.1 miles in 5:55, good enough for the top time of the day, a PR of 16:20. Moser showed a lot of toughness as he stayed close, just 8 second back with the 3rd fastest time of the day 16:28. McCauley showed his strength as he ran the last 1.1 miles of the race faster than anyone else on the day, covering it in 5:48, his time 16:31 led his Greely team to the title, teammates LePage (16:43) & Price (16:57) were 4th & 5th. Flathers came home in 6th (17:06) with freshman Follo leading Falmouth's 3rd place team with his (17:06). Hall having a great day was 8th (17:10), Gardner was 9th (17:26), while Greely's Fitch was 10th given the Rangers 4 of the top 10.
