Flaker Earns 400 Hurdles National Runner-up, Snyder medals in Pole Vault
Scarborough freshman Jarett Flaker had a busy week in Lawrence, Kansas at the USATF junior olympics at the University of Kansas.
Last Wednesday he opened his competition with a first place effort in the 15-16 400m hurdles as he was the top qualifier for the final with a personal best 55.82 as he won section 6.
On Thursday Flaker was back on the track for the 15-16 100m dash prelims, the Class A runner-up didn't disappoint as he clocked a new personal best of 11.02, that mark broke his own Maine freshman record. Although the time didn't advance him to the final it was the 26th best effort out of 57.
Friday saw him line up for the 400m prelims in section 1, he had a tremendous race that saw him place second overall in his section in a new personal best 49.49. This was the first time Flaker ran under 50 seconds, and moved him to 8th best in state history. The mark shattered his freshman state best of 50.12. The time placed Jarett 10th overall as he just missed the final by .11.
On Sunday he was back at it for his final race of his freshman season the 400m hurdle final. Flaker raced around the track finishing second overall and a new Maine all-time for the distance 54.52. The time moved him to the second best freshman in the US this season just behind the top time of 54.39.
On the year Jarett ran Maine freshman bests at 100m, 200m, 400m, 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles & 400m hurdles. He was also part of the state record 4x100 for the Scarborough Red Storm.
On Saturday Thornton Academy sophomore placed 5th in the 15-16 pole vault as he cleared 14-1 1/4. Snyder previously finished as the Class A runner-up in the vault clearing a Maine sophomore record and New England best of 15-6.
York junior Jacob Martin competed in 17-18 Decathlon scoring 5632 points to place 15th.
