Freshman Sofie Matson of Falmouth introduced herself to the SMAA on Thursday as she won the varsity girls #1 race en route to the fastest time of the day over the 1.5 mile course on the campus of Thornton Academy. Matson's winning effort of 8:18 was 13 seconds better than Massabesic's Kylie Johnson runner-up finish. Gorham's Anna Slager was next across in 8:32, with Christine Toye of Bonny Eagle following three seconds later.

In race #2 it was all Ami Beaumier of Bonny Eagle as she equalled the fourth fastest time overall with her 8:35, equalling her teammate Toye's effort in race #1. Also running well in race #2 was Falmouth freshman Karley Piers as she ran the 8th fastest time overall of 8:45.0

Bonny Eagle junior Kayla Raymond dominated race #3 by 33 seconds. Raymond's time of 8:38 was the 7th fastest overall on the day.

Gorham's Meadow Fortier posted the fastest time in race #4 with her 9:15 performance edging out Grace Tumavicus of Deering by 8 seconds.

Sarah Johnson of Gorham clocked the best time in race #5, 9:23. While in the race #6 it was another Ram of Gorham Carson Battaglia crossing the line in first place, her effort was 10:13.

In race #7 Deering's Julia Lancia was the top runner with her 10:15 performance.

Mia Murray of Kennebunk won the JV race with a winning effort of 10:03. While in the freshman race Hadley Poirier of Deering ran under 10 minutes as she clocked 9:53.

The girls had seven separate races featuring the best runners from each team.

It was a close team race as the winning margin was just nine seconds, but in the end the Scots of Bonny Eagle edged the Rams of Gorham for first place. Expect these two teams to match up very closely over 5k this season. The Scots appear to have one of the best top threes, while the Rams appear to have the edge on depth. Not to be overlooked in third place was Falmouth, the Yachtsmen making their SMAA debut finished third overall, but were running without defending Class A individual champion Malaika Pasch who is recovering from an injury. Deering was fourth followed by Kennebunk in 5th.

These two teams placed first and second at the Class A state championships a year ago, and if today was an indication they will do the same this fall.
