The mile will feature top seed Juliana Selser of South Portland who has the fastest time in the state this winter at 5:12.63. Selser the defending state champion at 800m and state record holder will be looking to add to her state title resume.
She will be pushed by defending mile state champion Malaika Pasch of Falmouth who is the second seed. Pasch was the SMAA runner-up in both the mile and 800m last time out. A year ago the junior clocked 5:24.12 to win the title.
The race strategy should be an interesting one with the two speedster leading the way. I would expect Selser and Pasch to control the pace, and perhaps setting it up for a fast finish. Selser is very hard to beat off this type of race so it may take someone pushing the pace early to take the kick out of her legs.
Bonny Eagle's Kayla Raymond has the pedigree to do just that. The junior won the SMAA title in 5:18.42, and has 2:20 800m speed as well. Her teammate Ami Beaumier is the fourth seed with her time of 5:21.73, she finished fourth in the event a year ago.
