XC Watchlist: Martin Horne
School: Freeport
Year of Graduation: 2021
2018 State Meet Finish: 16:19.92 2nd in Class B
How long have you been running and how did you get started?
I have been running outdoor track since I was in 6th grade, and I
switched from soccer to xc my freshmen year. I practiced with the soccer
team for most of pre-season in 9th grade before my sister convinced me to
try xc.
What has your summer training consisted of? How much mileage you putting in?
So far my summer trainings been mostly easy mileage. I started at 30
miles a week at the end of the school year, and since then I've slowly
raised it to 40mi. I try to do core at least 3-4 times a week, and I do
strength once a week. I also make sure to do strides at least 3 times
per week.
What are your goals for the upcoming season?
I'm not sure exactly how I'll stack up against the other guys in
class b, but I definitely want to be competitive in the post season and
hopefully get back into the top 3 at states. I've struggled a bit with
distances over 800m since I developed asthma last fall, but I'm
optimistic that I'll have a good season.
What is your favorite workout?
My favorite workout is probably 400m repeats. I feel like I get the most
out of them. My team usually does them a few times in track and xc
seasons.
What did you learn from last xc season that will help you improve in 2019?
I think the most important thing I learned from last season is that the
the only thing you can control in a race is your effort level. I learned
that its better to be satisfied knowing you did everything you could to
win a race than focusing on a less than ideal performance.
When you are not running what is your favorite thing to do?
Outside of running, I like to hike, and nordic ski. I also enjoy alpine skiing.
Do you have any pre-race rituals or routines?
The day before important races, I like to do strides, a super light
foam roll, and then a long stretch. I eat some kind of simple carb for
dinner the night before, usually pasta or rice. On the bus ride to the
race, I like to think about being on the line, and visualize a perfect
outcome.
Favorite quote?
"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift." - Prefontaine
I train in the Pegasus 34s, and I race in the Saucony Havoc XC.
What professional athlete would you most like to meet?
Probably Eliud Kipchoge. He's obviously incredibly fast, but he also seems like a super down to earth guy.
What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is definitely nut/seed butter. I eat a lot of peanut and almond butter, and I also like sun butter.
