Matson Breaks Course Record, Falmouth Surprises on Boys Side

Sofie Matson of Falmouth shattered the course record at Twin Brook, and in the process became the only school girl in history to break 18 minutes on the storied course. Matson's record breaking run of 17:51.74 broke the 18:05.59 record set in 2011 by Kennebunk's Abbey Leonardi, and lowered her own best on the course by 50 seconds.
Behind her Kate Tugman of Gorham became just the 15 school girl to run under 19 minutes at Twin Brook with her excellent 18:55.81. Tugman battled with Falmouth junior Karley Piers for much of the race before putting a gap on her in the final mile of the race,
Piers wound up third in a strong 19:1.14 effort.
The surprise of the meet might have come from Emmaline Pendleton of Bonny Eagle who finished fourth running 19:35.48, which was her second fastest time of the year and huge Twin Brook personal best. Behind her teammate Delaney Hesler was strong also running under 20 minutes with her 19:47.39 effort.
Kayla Werner & Megan Randall of Scarborough were next, while freshman Addie Fuller of Marshwood continued her strong first year placing eighth.
Estella Inman of Windham came across ninth, and was followed by another green Bonny Eagle jersey as sophomore Hannah Stevens finished in 20:45.27.
Bonny Eagle the defending regional champion and top ranked team in the state easily won with 59 points as they placed three in the top 10 led by Emmaline Pendleton's fourth place finish.
Falmouth was the runner-up with 83 points behind the 1-3 finish from Matson and Piers while Gorham nabbed third place with 100 points.

The Class A boys individual race was exciting as five boys exited the pain cave with a chance to win. In the end it was junior Ben Greene of Falmouth using his superior kick to pull away from a talented field to earn his first individual regional title in his first ever xc season. Grenne's winning effort was 16:32.20, while teammate Ben Potter was close behind in 16:34.43.
They were followed by a pair of Scarborough athletes as Tristram Coffin and Zach Barry ran 16:35.97, and 16:37.58 respectively.
800m specialist Mahamed Sharif performed very well in his first Twin Brook race as he was fifth in 16:40.62.
Gorham sophomore Calvin Cummings ran 16:49.50 to place sixth, he was followed by another sophomore Chris Walton of Biddeford. Kennebunk senior Ethan Eickmann who hasn't race in over a month showed a little rust as he placed eighth.
Reed Henderson of Gorham was next across in ninth, while senior Aiden Willey of Bonny Eagle rounded out the the top ten.
On the team side with the low sticks of Greene & Potter, the Yachtsmen of Falmouth pulled out a two point victory over defending champions and favored Scarborough 90-92.
Kennebunk finished third with 128 points, the Rams best finish in many years.
