Throwback Thursday: Dixon Sets 400m State Record
Today we throw it back to the 2015 Class A State Championship held at Mt Ararat High School in Topsham to the boys 400m race which featured Jake Dixon of Cheverus. Dixon a senior entered as the top seed with his 48.93.
As I remember it Dixon was dealing with a leg injury that caused him to miss the SMAA Southwesterns the previous week so there was some questions entering the meet whether or not he would be at 100 percent.
Dixon erased any doubts as he dominated the race powering down the homestretch with his eyes on the clock and a new personal best. The clock stopped at 48.45 giving the senior a new state meet record, and the fastest time ever run by a Maine high schoolboy over the quarter-mile distance. The previous state meet record was 48.56 set by Messalonskee's Chris Downe nineteen years earlier.
Later in the meet, Jake finished as the runner-up to Isaiah Harris in the 200m running 22.41. His efforts led the stags to a third-place finish.
Dixon went on to compete for the University of Virginia collegiately. His 400m time is still the Class A state meet record, and overall is the second-best ever run in state history.
