All-Time Maine Girls Shot Put Programs

Becky O'Brien of Greely is the state record holder in the shot put.

All-Time Shot Put Programs

We've been working to expand our vast results database this summer adding in several state championship meets dating back to 1996, and the plan is to continue throughout the summer.  While we don't have every team's top athletes of all-time we wanted to take a look at the data we had to see what programs (schools) had the top performers in every track and field event outdoors.

We scored each team just like a cross-country meet, giving 1 point for the fastest time and so on. A program's score is based on the top five performers in the event with the top 7 athletes acting as displacers.

Today we are going to take a look at the girl's shot put. Below are the top five programs based on the results we currently have in the database. For the complete list of 100 teams visit the link below.

COMPLETE LIST

The Greely Rangers are the top-ranked shot put program just edging out Waterville by 2 points. State record holder Becky O'Brien leads the way with her 51-6 1/2 effort. Behind here three more Rangers have broken 40 feet with Gwen Sawyer (40-7), Connie Beal (40-4 1/2), and Alyssa Coyne (40-4 1/4). Greely averaged 42-2 for their scoring five.

The Purple Panthers of Waterville are right in the conversation for the top shot program. Bethany Karter-O'brien leads the way with a 41-8 1/4 personal best while Sarah Cox is a close second at 41-5 3/4. Waterville averaged 40-1 1/4 for their scoring five.

Thornton Academy sits in the third spot as the Golden Trojans have had three girls throw over forty feet. Samantha Curran is the top thrower with her 40-7 1/2, with Victoria Lux (40-6 3/4) and Brynn Smith (40-6) right behind.

The Wildcats of York rank as the fourth-best program in state history. York has had two girls throw over forty-one feet led by Katie D'Entremont's personal best 41-5 1/2.

Rounding out the top five programs in the shot put is Gray-New Gloucester. GNG is led by Louis Duffus's 38-11 1/2 effort. 2021 graduate Zoe Barnes ranks fifth in GNG outdoor history with her 35-2 best.
