2020 Maine XC Watchlist: Ava Dowling, Hampden Academy

Notable Finishes: 4th NM Class A Regional 2019, 6th Class A States 2019, 12th KVAC Championship 2019

Comments:
Dowling took her running to another level in the 2019 postseason. After a 12th place effort at the KVAC Championship, she exploded at Regionals crossing the line in fourth. At the state meet, she was even better as she finished 6th. Now a senior look for Dowling to challenge for a top-five finish at the state meet this fall.

How has COVID-19 affected you?

I've felt a lot more independent but also alone in making decisions. I haven't personally been affected but it definitely put a strain in my life especially for someone like me who is family and socially oriented.

What has your summer training consisted of? How much mileage are you putting in?

Well, I've been running with the summer schedule that my coaches have given me and I'm running 6 days out of 7, my milage has been 25-30 miles a week.

What are your goals for the upcoming season?

I hope to make it in the top 10 at states again and hopefully have another successful season where I can also PR.

What is your favorite workout that makes you feel most prepared for success?

Mile repeats really help show me that I'm prepared and ready for the final race.

What did you learn from the last xc season that will help you improve in 2020?

Stay positive and continue to believe in the schedule that the coaches have put together for me.

How is your team looking for the fall?

They're not sure what the season will look like but the veterans on the team are really determined to get where they want to go this season.

How do you stay motivated when you don't want to run?

I just told myself that it would help me further down the road. And I knew that if there was a day I didn't feel like running or was tired then I didn't run, I gave myself the break. Or if I just felt like switching things up then I did a stationary workout instead.

What is the greatest piece of advice you've ever received in the sport?

Trust, trust yourself, your coaches, and the plan they have for you, trust your team, and trust in your abilities.

What are the top three "little things" that you do to prevent injury?

Stretch, good shoes, and paying attention (focus).

What is the one thing you have done during COVID-19 that you have never had time for in the past?

Well, I sprained my ankle in April so I really had a lot of time to sit down and realize how important running is to me and what it does to benefit me.
What's the farthest you've ever run at one time?

10 miles.

If every day were a holiday, what would yours be?

Veterans Day, I don't think the veterans that have served our country have gotten enough praise and support for what they have done for us. They shouldn't be celebrated just one day a year.

Favorite subject in school?

Science, I can't wait to be a nursing student.

If you could go on a run with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? Why?

I'd like to go on a group run with the bongos XC coach, coach Huber, Lydia Gilmore, Erin Mcarthy, my coaches, Coach Johnson and Coach Veitch, and my Dad. These people are so supportive of me and also love to run. These people are my running family.

If your teammates gave you a superlative, what would it be?

It would be that I am well rounded and I stay in touch with my teammates, being supportive of them and making sure that they can all talk to me. And also that I'm very focussed on my runs, I know how important they are to my success at the end of the season.
