2020 Maine XC Watchlist: Ben Greene, Falmouth HS

Notable Finishes: 1st SM Class A Regional 2019, 4th Class A State Championship 2019, 5th Festival of Champions 2019, 37th New England Championship 2019

Comments: Greene's debut cross-country season went very well. He'll be back looking to win the individual title this fall after a fourth-place effort in 2019. With a year of racing xc under his belt look for Greene to have a very strong fall.

How has COVID-19 affected you?

From a running standpoint it has affected me by preventing me from competing in indoor nationals, obviously not having an outdoor track season, and also not being able to visit college campuses in person.

What has your summer training consisted of? How much mileage are you putting in?

This summer I've been doing a lot of base, which is a large improvement from last year because I didn't do as many miles last summer, so I'm feeling much stronger.

What are your goals for the upcoming season?

I'm hoping to break the 5k Falmouth school record and be state champion.

What is your favorite workout that makes you feel most prepared for success?

Repeats at the Falmouth community parks.

What did you learn from the last xc season that will help you improve in 2020?

Learning how to stay with someone if they make a move in the middle of the race.

How is your team looking for the fall?

We lost some strong seniors, but we have some underclassmen who have good potential.

How do you stay motivated when you don't want to run?

Get into a solid routine and keep it fun, so it doesn't feel like an obligation and more so as something you want to do and love.

What is the greatest piece of advice you've ever received in the sport?

Be patient and trust your training.

What are the top three "little things" that you do to prevent injury?

Hydration, strength training, and proper nutrition.

What is the one thing you have done during COVID-19 that you have never had time for in the past?

I got a dog.

What's the farthest you've ever run at one time?

12 miles.

If every day were a holiday, what would yours be?

Thanksgiving.

Favorite subject in school?

Social Studies.

If you could go on a run with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? Why?

Isaiah Harris because he is one of the few professional xc and track athletes from Maine, so there's a lot I could ask him and talk about.

If your teammates gave you a superlative, what would it be?

Most likely to find a porta potty on a run.
