Ben Greene Runs to Victory At SMAA State Qualifier


Ben Green (#25) of Falmouth pulled away from the lead pack in the last 800m en route to victory at the SMAA Cumberland County State Qualifier meet at Gorham on Saturday.

Senior Ben Greene of Falmouth pulled away from the lead pack with 800m to go at Gorham on Saturday morning and powered his way across the finish line first in the SMAA Cumberland County State Qualifier in a time of 16:01.74. 

Behind him, the Red Storm duo of junior Zachary Barry (16:15) and Erik LoSacco (16:18) crossed next. They were followed by junior Calvin Cummings (16:33) and senior Reed Henderson (16:40) of Gorham to round out the top five.

The Falmouth duo of Faran Igani (16:48) and Logan Ross (16:54) placed sixth and seventh giving the Yachtsmen three under 17 minutes.

South Portland's Jacob Ramos crossed the finish line in 17:02.68 securing him the automatic individual spot for next's month state championship meet. Gorham's Josh Lehmann (17:04) was ninth followed by Alexey Seredin of Deering. Seredin will be in the unique position of running in the SMAA York County Championship next week to try and secure the third individual spot in the state meet.

The Red Storm of Scarborough won the team race with a score of fifty points to advance to the state meet. In addition to the 2-3 finish of Barry and LoSacco, sophomore Adam Bendetson was 12th, while senior Warren O'Shea finishing first in the second wave race and 16th overall despite taking a wrong turn when he was in the lead about halfway through the race. Senior Ben Cassellius rounded out the top five for Scarborough in 17th.

Falmouth (65 points) and Gorham (86 points) also will advance to the state meet. Bonny Eagle had a strong race as they finished just three points behind with 89, while South Portland scored 98 points to finish fifth.
