The 2020 cross-country season has been anything but normal, and Wednesday's WMC Class B state qualifier continued that trend with a hint of snow in the air in the morning leading up to the race. By race time the snow had transitioned to rain and with temperatures in the low 40's making racing just a little bit tougher.

Senior Sam Wilson of Greely didn't change his racing gear opting for shorts and a singlet. Wilson set the pace for the race controlling things from the front before making a move with a mile to go dropping everyone but senior Martin Horne of Greely. Wilson never relented and powered his way across the line first in a time of 16:26.34 as he held off Horne(16:27.09) by less than a second.

"My goal was just to beat Martin." Wilson commented after the race.

Looking ahead to the Class B state meet Wilson has confidence, "I really think that I can win at states."

Horne will advance to the state meet as an individual with his performance.

Leif Harvey came up big for the Rangers with his third-place finish as he held off the top runner from Cape Elizabeth Vaughn Lindenau, 16:44.65 to 16:45.64. Cape's Owen Patry rounded out the top finishers with his 16:51 effort.

Poland's Jake Twigg secured his spot in the state meet with his seven place finish, Twigg covered the layout at the Hunter Road Fields in 17:18.

With four runners in the top ten, the Rangers of Greely won the team title with thirty-eight points besting runner-up Cape Elizabeth by twenty-points. Yarmouth finished in third with ninety-six points. All three teams will advance to the Class B state meet.

Freshman Hadley Mahoney running in her first high school championship meet went with the conservative approach.

"The plan was not to go too hard the first mile and try to dominate the second loop,"  Mahoney told us about her race strategy.

Mahoney executed like a savvy veteran as she pulled away from the field over the second half of the race as she covered the 5k course in 19:49.18. Her winning margin was twenty-seconds.

Hadley will head into the Class B state meet as the individual favorite. She says she's looking forward to getting pushed by the other competitors and is excited to compete for the state title.

Senior Maddie Marston of Yarmouth was the runner-up in a time of 20:16, while Fryeburg Academy's Alana Natulak finished third. Natulak will advance to the state meet as an individual based on her finish.

Greely's Abby Irish placed fourth, she will advance as the second-best individual. Freeport sophomore Jillian Wight rounded out the top five finishers with her 20:57 effort.

Cape Elizabeth behind Mahoney's first place and excellent home stretch finishes from its other four athletes held on to win the WMC Class B title with 62 points. Yarmouth placed second with 64 points while host Freeport advanced to states with 66 points. Greely who scored 68 points will miss the state meet. When the scores were originally announced Greely was in second place but after a review of all the athletes, Yarmouth moved from fourth to second as Ella Maxwell who ran in the second wave had a minute subtracted from her time.
