Maine State XC: Class A Girls Five Athletes To Watch

2019 Class A State XC Championship

The Class A state meet was canceled on Monday but we still wanted to highlight the girls that we would have featured in our five athletes to watch. We've also included a poll so you can vote for who you think would have won the individual title

Sofie Matson (Falmouth)

Grade: Senior

2019 State Meet Finish: 1st place

2020 Best 5k: 17:37.10

Matson was expected to win her fourth consecutive Class A individual title, if that happened she would have joined an exclusive group (Abbey Leonardi & Carsyn Koch) who have completed the feat. Sofie won five races on the season and has never lost a high school race to another Maine runner throughout her high school career.

Karley Piers (Falmouth)

Grade: Senior

2019 State Meet Finish: 2nd place

2020 Best 5k: 18:02.40

Piers finished second in all five of her races this fall each time finishing behind her teammate Sofie Matson. Piers ran under 19 minutes three times on the season including a personal best 18:02.40. While Piers ran in the shadows of Matson throughout her career, she has posted some impressive marks that would win her the state title in most years.

Delaney Hesler (Bonny Eagle)

Grade: Junior

2019 State Meet Finish: 4th place

2020 Best 5k: 18:04.60

Last year's 4th place finisher from the state meet Hesler had a very strong fall that saw her run a personal best 18:04.60 for 5k. Delaney won three races in 2020, and last time out was third at the SMAA Cumberland County Championship. Only a junior Hesler will be one of the individual favorites entering 2021.

Emmaline Pendleton (Bonny Eagle)

Grade: Junior

2019 State Meet Finish: 10th place

2020 Best 5k: 18:45.10

Pendleton put together a strong fall that saw her lower her personal best for 5k to 18:45.10. She ran faster than her best time in 2019 in three different races this fall. Last time out she finished fourth in the SMAA Cumberland County Championship. Emmaline will be one of the individual favorites entering 2021.

Erin McCarthy (Bangor)

Grade: Senior

2019 State Meet Finish: 8th place

2020 Best 5k: 19:21.55

McCarthy had a perfect senior season winning all four races she started. On the season her best effort was a 19:21.55 win at the Maine Festival of Champions. Erin won the KVAC Class A title last time out and was ready to improve on her 8th place state meet finish from 2019.
