Trefts Shatters 1600m Racewalk State Record

Old Town High School senior Izabelle Trefts opened her 2021 outdoor track and field season with a 7:45.61 effort for the 1600m racewalk and has dropped that time in each of her next four races. Trefts won the 2019 Class B racewalk title with a 7:26.07 effort, a time that broke the state freshman record, and ranked fourth fastest in state history

After missing the 2020 outdoor season due to the COVID-19 pandemic Trefts also decided to graduate a year early. Coming into the 2021 season she had her eyes on the state record of 7:19.77 by Caitlin Bonney of Mt. Blue which was set back in 2000.

On Saturday at Old Town Trefts did just that as she covered 1600m in a record-breaking 7:12.64, shattering the state record by seven seconds. Her time currently leads the entire state including all-male competitors. Additionally, her time is the current US #1 in the event.

"I feel like I can get faster I've dropped time every week so I'm hoping to finish out my season this way. I always said I wanted to finish high school in under 7 minutes so that would be pretty cool if I can end up doing that! I'm definitely going to keep working hard and trying to get that sub 7." Trefts said Saturday evening.

She'll have two more chances to attack the seven-minute barrier with the upcoming PVC championship and Class B state meet. Trefts already holds the PVC league record at 7:34.55 from 2019, and Class B state meet record at 7:26.07.

After this year Izaebelle with continue her academic and athletic career at Columbia College, an NAIA school in South Carolina.
