John Raneri (New Fairfield, CT) used his home course advantage, to pull away from the rest of the field at the half way point. “I’ve run this course 8 or 9 times, I know the spots where to make a move.”- Raneri would say postrace. Raneri had a ten second lead at two miles, which he passed in 10:00. Will Geoghegan (Brunswick, ME pictured left) was 2nd will Christopher Bendtse (Wolcott, CT) running in 3rd. Raneri would continue to pull away from the filed over the last mile using his powerful stride to navigate the wet, muddy and slick course. John clocked a fine 15:57, the only runner under 16 minutes on the day. “I don’t have a strong kick, so I made a move half way through the race like I did last week at CT Championship meet.” Raneri would comment after the race before embarking on a muddy slide down the hill. Bendtse would close well over the mile to nab the runner-up finish, the 2nd week in a row he’s been behind Raneri. Geoghegan the Maine state class A champion would hold on for 3rd, Aaron Watanbe (Hanover, NH) held on to over the final mile for 4th, while Nate Hathaway (Scarborough, ME) would round out the top 5 running 16:19.
The team race was close between Bishop Hendricken, RI, Bishop Guertin, NH, & Pinkerton Academy, NH; all three were separated by just 14 points. Bishop Hendricken, RI topped Bishop Guertin, NH by one point for New England boys title. Guertin had early lead as they had two in the top 10 (Francis Hernandez-6th & Jeff Lacoste -8th), other scorers for BG were (Joey Jourdain 54th, Brandon Latham 59th, & Trent Fontanella 78th ). Hendricken first runner across was (Jake Sienko- 17th), BH pack time 2-5 was just 30 seconds as (Mike Mackenzie 35th, Brian Doyle45th, Ryan Meehan53rd, Andrew Andrake 68th) rounded out the top 5. For 3rd place Pinkerton’s (Jake Hawkins-25th) led the way with (Chris Pietrocarlo 33rd, Tony Anzivino 41st, Mike O’Hara 52nd, & Sean Leighton 89th) rounding out their 5 scorers.
