Salute to Seniors: Tori Hews (Cape Elizabeth HS)

When and how did you get into track and field?

I got into track when I was in about 5th grade. I did some summer track camps and that's when I found out I loved the sport. I did it all throughout middle and high school (minus my sophomore year season due to covid).

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

I had a variety of competition, some girls in the WMC and some girls I only got to race at states. Some of the girls were from teams including Greely, York, Gardiner and Poland.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was winning states in 3 of my events (100,200, 4x1) and coming in 2nd in another (4x4) for my senior year season while walking away with the runners up plaque. I've wanted to break 13 for so long and have worked pretty hard for it, and finally did it at states. I PR'd in all of my events and my team got to compete at New Englands where we PR in the 4x1 for the last time.

How has track and field impacted your life?

It has impacted my life because it gave me motivation to work hard for something and work together as a team yet compete in an individual level. It also gave me a great hobby that I get to have for another 4 years going into college.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

First, this season I had pretty bad shin splints. They would be so painful sometimes that I would have to sit out for multiple practices and miss a lot of training which could've helped me more in the long run. I had numerous doctor and trainer visits, but in all honesty, it didn't help much. I would just have to stretch, rest, and take ibuprofen for practices and meets.

Second, I would say that being in my own head was a huge obstacle. Track is just as much of a mental sport as it is physical. I would have to mentally prepare myself for races or else no matter how in shape I was, I could perform poorly and be hard on myself. I had to learn to get over that and just have fun while also being in competition.

How do you prepare for competitions?

For competitions, I would also have some type of energy bar and a Celsius. I would also pack 2 water bottles and bring 2 rollers for my shins and apply KT tape to my right shin.

What influence has your coach had on your high school career?

My coaches definitely made the sport a lot more fun. They made practices fun and helped me work harder and do things for my shins. I only got 2 seasons with them because I moved to Cape from New Hampshire, but it was the best 2 seasons I had ever experienced.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of track and field?

Outside of track I love to travel, hangout with friends, ski and go shopping. I also love playing other sports.

What are your college plans?

Next year I am committed to run track at Wheaton College! I plan to go pre-med and major in something like biology.

What are your long term goals?

My long term goals are to be in the medical field and have a major in some type of science. I have 4 more years of track, but after that I am done.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to say thank you to my whole team including coaches and my competition. My team and coaches all felt like a big supportive family that made the sport inclusive and fun and my competition pushed me and motivated me to get better.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

This sounds cliche, but I would say to set goals, work hard until you achieve those goals, then when you do, its the best feeling ever.
