XC Countdown 2022: #7 South Portland Boys

Maine MileSplit 2022 XC Team Countdown

With the calendar switching to August soon we wanted to switch gears from the track to the trails to get ready for the upcoming cross-country season. Athletes around the state are hitting the roads and trails building up a strong base in hopes of a successful cross-country in 2022, with the hopes of lifting the state championship as a team in November the ultimate goal. Our plan is to highlight who we think are the top 25 returning girls and boys xc teams over the next three weeks. Thanks to Cheverus XC/track coach Nick Denari for volunteering his time and efforts to put this countdown together.

Kyle Hartford is set to be one of the top runner for the Red Riots this fall.

2022 Outlook: South Portland could be a real title threat come October if things come together for them. The Red Riots return 4 of their top 7 athletes (all of them seniors) from their runner-up squad at Regionals last season. Interestingly, their next 3 best returning athletes were all freshmen last year, and SoPo will hope that one or more of them can make the jump to run with the seniors. Nickerson and Hartford are experienced athletes and will be great leaders for this team. Pack running will be key for the Red Riots, and they will try to get their 5th runner across the line before other team's 4th or even 3rd runners.
